I should have been clearer, it was more looking for confirmation that my statement was accurate. When score no 20 drops off it will only affect your index if it was 1 of your best 8?

Correct. As I see it, there are only two ways your index will change (once someone is up to 20 rounds).
1. Your latest round is better than your previous 8th-best* round. Previous 8th-best drops out of the calculation and is replaced by the latest round.
2. Your previous 20th oldest round is one of your best* 8 rounds. It drops out of the calculation and is replaced by whatever would have been 9th best (which could be your latest round).
*Lowest score differential is done to determine your eight best rounds.

I hope this is right as I'm worried it's too simple - not an accusation that can often be levelled at handicap calculations.

It could have been even easier. ;)
Simply replace the "HI reduced/increased" boxes by "Average of best 8 recalculated"
