I have now been playing for just over a year, and have gradually cut my handicap and improved quiet a bit... I play in a monthly 'improvers' 9 hole competition on a par-33 course. These days I generally score between 42 and 45. Today's rain et al meant I shot a 50!!!!.

If I think back on the game, despite the weather, it was me not applying basic technique and mentally collapsing that did me in. Absolutely gutted.

How does one pick oneself from here. Any one got any views on what they do to forget? Being Paddy's day, Guinness is one option.. any other?

I don't know the answer but if you find out let my man know. Pairs stableford and we're on the 15th tee with 52 points between us and so well in the mix. We scored 57 in total and I got 4 out of those 5 on the last four holes. We came home in the proverbial ambulance but my partner had one of those nasty meltdowns from hitting it solid but getting no reward to chucking some real left field shots from nowhere.

Still on a personal level I was pleased with my overall contribution of 31 with three blow outs (all on par 3's) and know the ball striking wasn't brilliant but I found a way to get it round. Weather wasn't too bad apart from one really heavy shower so can't blame that. 68 was leading so it really was one that got away

Get back on the horse, have another go, it will work out fine just you see

Golf is like that, thats why its so addictive

one day you play like Sevvy, next day you play like Imurg

Such is life

Fragger :-)

Edit Actually id love to play like Imurg :-(

Just crack on and play again, it's only golf!

I played like an absolute huddy on the front 9 today. I was +8 stood on the 10th tee.

Had a good laugh about it getting the coffee's in at halfway and played the back 9 in -2. If I was feeling sorry for myself I hate to think what score I could have racked up today......

Thanks fellas.. have had a few stiff ones.. so will sleep like a baby tonight (so possibly poo and cry midway thru the night).. will wake up tomorrow, still wondering how I managed to blow the 1st par 3 with a 7??. Golf is a gr8 equiliser. Will get back on the horse next week and let you guys know.

... It is always lonely at the top (of the bunker)

Had my worst round in about a year on Friday.

Statrted off with an 8 on the 1st, a par 4. One penalty shot there that cost me. +4

Double on the second - long par 5. Three good strikes, then dumped in a bunker. +6

Double on the third - long par 4 into the wind - 1 very good putt from 40 feet lipped out - missed the tap in... +8

Par 5 4th - 1 foot off the green in 3 with the flag only 8 yards away, uphill chip... lifted head, thinned it, tonk. Double. +10

Out in 59 so had to come back in back +2 to hit handicap - Knew that wasn't happening so was all out damage limitation. Didn't think it could get any worse. It could, and did. Came back in 60. Shocking.

Had my first par on the 8th... second par on the 12th. Everything else was utter guff.

You've got to try and and find the positives to pick yourself back up. The only real positive I could find was that after my duffed 6 iron on our par 3 17th, I managed to connect with a smooth 9 iron from the ladies tee... and get it bang on line, the only one of the day. Unfortunately for me, I thought i'd pulled out my PW so when I got to the green with my ball not in sight, I could only laugh. Up hill chip from the clag, with one foot in the sand... followed by a 3 putt. Belting stuff.

119. Embarassing.

After a promising round last weekend, someting went wrong yesterday...

I've been working on my short game and have been getting some coaching on this area. This has improved me me so far...

I made the mistake on copying something that was discussed by Dennis Pugh on Thursday (I'm sure it's great advice, but I now think i'm trying to change to much too soon). So alot of my striking wasn't great.

I also 3 putted 6 or the first 9 holes...

So for me? Keep it simple and work on my putting stroke!

I'm convinced i'll do better next time!

I go out for a bike ride - something I can manage without stuffing it up and get a sense of well-being and pleasure from.

<Update>
The glorious morning, helped get me out of the house (despite being Mothers day - guess the Mrs had enuf of my sulking yesterday). Played on a different course with my mates. Ended up with an indifferent score, BUT I think i found my swing.. A lot more greens in regulation (generously speaking)... but the greens were pretty unpredictable, so 3+ putted on most holes. Found my driver mojo too...

Golf is such an equaliser.. Someday you are the statue, some day you are the pigeon.

To pick me up I forget about golf for a few days and then think about the day I didn't play well. What was different? The weather, my frame of mind? Were the pin positions harder? Were the fairways plugging? Was my shot choice bad, was I swinging poorly? Etc.

Then, by the next time you go out you have a plan for a few little things to adjust and you usually play much better.

i like the approch...

I always recover from a bad round with one thought!

It Doesn't matter how bad the golf was, I was doing something I enjoy with my mates, and there are many millions of people who don't have that optioN

I agree.. we all go out there for the fun.. but I find it refreshing to get shirty every few weeks at our monthly competitions. Unfortunately, yesterday, played rubbish at the competition.. hence the sulk..

if I have a shocker I dont worry about it, analyse what went wrong etc. I just think ok, that was crap, maybe next week I will play awesomely.

It doesnt really work by the way as for 10 months I have had the same chat to myself every Sunday night... until today!

Golf is a sport never mastered but that doesnt stop us trying to :fore:

If I am having one of those days where everything is going wrong, I just try to relax and enjoy being out. Harder to do in practice, but when I have done this and start having a bit of fun you get 1 good strike away. Sometimes thats all it takes to swing without apprehension or fear.

sometimes a purple patch can be started on the last few holes of a terrible round!

If that doesn't happen, pick the worst part of your performance - e.g driving, irons or short game and work on that solely before the next round. I used to try and fix everything all at the same time, seem to get more joy by picking the worst aspect and focusing on that for the whole week.

when things are going wrong i reach for my goto clubs and just use them either choking down on the grip to adjust range or gentle 3/4 swinging , a couple of steady shots back under your belt and you soon have the spring back in your step.

in my case its a 7i or 23' utility

In the next few weeks if you manage to hit never before discovered depths of despair and doom, shoot your worse ever score or play like a real muppet I would like you to say one word to yourself as you walk off the 18th which will open your eyes with stunning clarity to the real extent of your situation - MUAMBA
