Just a simple question really

How serious do people take their golf ?

When you arrive at the course what is your main aims of the day

Mine -

I don't take it that serious , it's enjoyment for me and a relaxing time

When I arrive at the club my first aim is to have a good pleasurable round with good company and a bit of banter. Then will look to play as well as I can and hopefully a good score might happen.

Same view as you, don't take it a serious as I should for the amount of times I play. I am always disappointed when I don't play well but I just like having a good laugh and taking the p and receiving it back tenfold

To me, winter golf is fun time as the course is shorter and non qualifying, accept that the course isn't at its best and just get on with it.
Summer golf is more competitive though and usually want to kick something after a bad round.

When I used to play very rarely at the weekend due to work I used to take my occasional weekend games very seriously which often resulted in a bad score and/or result. Now I am free to play most weekends and have a semi regular group where bad shots are laughed and joked about by all (including whoever played it) I find I am playing more relaxed and as a result the scores are getting lower and lower ... and if they don't then it doesn't matter because I've still enjoyed the company.

Saying that though, if I went in to any competition without the ambition to win I don't think I would be playing golf.

It's no surprise to most on here how I take my game..... Winter is time just to get out and work on what I have to.....

Come the season start though I won't lie.... I try and win every comp I enter.... I'm certainly not paying an entry fee to go out and have a knockabout with mates.... Playing football since I was 8 I was always going to get one over on myself everytime I play.... I wouldn't expect people that have never played sports growing up to understand....

I practice hard and play hard..... Just my way.....

Not at all nowadays, place now and again and never practice. Pre match routine normally consists if a coffee, a fag and a bit of banter. Took it serious once and got down to 5, knackered my knee, handicap ended up at 10 after hardly playing for 2 years. Lost any interest in being serious about golf. Playing with Region3 tomorrow, be only the 6th time I have touched my clubs since the end of August.

I just play for a bit of fun. I couldn't really care if I win or not as long as the company is good and I have an enjoyable time. It's serious enough on the course but only a game at the end of the day.

When playing with my mate on a Sunday, it's just a walk around hitting a small white ball, I don't line putts up, I just stand over the ball, have a quick look so I've got the general direction and if it get close, brilliant, if it goes in, even better.

I do try to hit my drives with concentration as that's part of my game I'm working on, but other than that, hey ho.

I always play against the course and want to beat it. If my playing partners don't beat it then thats up to them.

For me golf is a very personal challenge, I want to play as well as I can and can only get a feeling of elation when I play well. I do enjoy playing with friends but if I wasn't trying to beat them I just as well be watching East Enders

I aim to score as low as i can every time I play, that's why I play. Sure I'll have a laugh on the way round but if I don't play well or score well, I don't enjoy it as much. Golf for me has always been about the challenge and trying to be as good as I can be, if I wasn't taking it seriously or trying to improve, there would be no point playing

+1 .... Saves me writing the same !!

I am still feel I am at the newby stage as this is my 2nd year.. Play as much as I can, talk about golf as much as I can and always watching / reading hoping for the killer tip!!

Hooked !!!

I share Hawkeyes view. If I didn't want to play the game better than I do I wouldn't bother practicing and then there'd be little point to it. Well, maybe I'd still enjoy the banter but playing well and winning is what sport is based on, isn't it?

I'm a bit half and half...
Take Snelly and Hawkeye's views, mix em up a bit and that's where I am.
Down the years I've won a fair bit so actually winning Silverware or whatever isn't my goal anymore. Most of my golf is "social" as we only get 2 comps a month midweek and I can't always play in them. I'd still like to get the handicap lower, there's always room for improvement and winning is still nice but playing well is higher up the list-lets face it you could shoot a PB and still lose. Top of the list is enjoyment. This has been my target for a couple of years now. Without that there really is no point in playing the game.

Beating Fragger, however, fulfills all of the above......except I don't always have to play well!

I don't like making silly mistakes but I recognise "Golf isn't a game of Perfect." I hate putting in a horror show but as long as I break 80 I'm happy.

I probably visit the practice ground 2 or 3 times a year, and then its only for 20 mins max, to sort out a wrinkle. No, I don't take it seriously... life's too short to worry about something like golf.

Off up the club to play in the swindle shortly. A fiver in and depending on how many turn out there are 3 prizes. Most I have ever won is seventy five quid so I will be taking it very seriously.

I got quite obsessive with practise and lessons at one point

Bounce games were always fun with a bit of light competitive banter

However in the society, and indeed when Ive played with guys on here and there is money riding on it, I have been known to get quite serious at times.

When there is a prize on offer, and I really, really focus, thats when Ive produced my best golf. I think the GM event at Princes I won, with a very big prize, on the back-9 was probably the most focussed I have ever been on a course and after a poor front-9 I played the back-9 exceptionally well, with total focus and scored very, very well.

I enjoy a relaxing, fun knock with mates, but also really enjoy the competitive side.

It remains to be seen how serious I will get on my return to the game, Im scheduling 3 range sessions a week at present and will hopefully get a few games in on a nomadic basis before Christmas, if the bug bites again it will be lessons and club membership, and then who knows where. If I can get back to my previous best within 6-months I will be trying hard for single figures!!

Score as low as I can as often as I can.

Not a club chucker or anything but I will always want to try to score well and get a little frustrated when I don't play well. Really cannot see the point of throwing clubs.

Putting badly at the moment and finding this a bit frustrating so I am practicing a lot at home.

While i'm doing this I will look to have a good time with my FC / regular playing partners. Always nice to meet new people and have a chat as you go round. Played with a guy once who was constantly muttering to himself about how he was playing and was telling me how he lives to competitive golf, I would think I am a long way off this but I just want to play well, playing well helps me enjoy my round, playing badly is frustrating.
