How many pars should you get in a round

A while ago, in response to a post I came across something along the lines as "as a 18 handicapper, you should aim to get 4 pars per round". Is that a correct view and if so what is the basis for that?

In my July Medal, I shot 5 pars (along with 7 DB or worse) and came home with a +21. Should I be happy or otherwise?

At your HC you should get no pars as you get a shot

Technically, you should get 17 gross bogeys and 1 gross double bogey. But we all know that isn't how golf works. I guess if you allow for 4 holes of gross par, you can allow for 4 holes of nett bogeys (or double depending on SI).

GiD.. which edition is it from? Might dig it out.

What if I reword the question to 'How many Pars should you aim to get per round'??

I always think if I can get somewhere between 7 and 10 I'm doing OK. Average so far this year is 7.29 whihc is a bit of a surprise given I've been pants for most of it.

I play off 17 and tend to get 4-6 pars per round (taking out the terrible rounds and the brilliant ones) however it's the other 12-14 holes that let me down!

I do know. I just saved it to my laptop the first time it appeared on here! sorry bud! I just thought it was an interesting article.

I don't worry. Good scores take care of itself and if I swing badly I'll get fewer unless the short game is really on fire. I try for par on every hole but play it one shot at a time and worry about the next shot once I find it

Depends a fair bit on what you mean by 'aim for' too. If you're talking about a post-hoc benchmark to grade how you played then an aim is fine, but when you stand on the first tee you don't want to be thinking "right, today I must make 8 pars". You don't really even want to think "I want to par this hole", you just want to hit the best shot you can. Do that all day, hit every shot the best you can, and you'll probably find that the pars take care of themselves.

So far this season in 16 competition rounds I'm averaging

1.5 Birdies
7 pars
6 bogeys
3.5 double or worse

Not sure what that means though.
