How long have you been playing for?

Started age 17 with a half set handed down from an aunt, playing Kinross when it was a 9-holer. Had several periods when there was no golf as was in the RAF but now, 60 years later, play at least 3 times a week all year round.

Always went on pitch'n'putts courses and putting greens on Summer holidays from quite a young age but didn't swing a club on a course until I accompanied a friend and his Dad around a course when I was about 10 or 11.
Didn't really play at all until the late 80's when I started hacking around with a few mates from the cricket club, playing a 9 hole course at Wexham.
Played my first full 18 around '91(ish) and shot 139.
Had to write from cricket in '92 and decided I needed to play a sport of some description and went with golf.
Kitted myself out with semi-decent clubs, spent a winter on the range honing my craft and eventually joined a club in '93, just before I turned 30 and got my first handicap of 15. Went out to my highest of 15.3 before getting some cuts.
And the rest, as they say, is hysterics!!
Still only ever had one, free half hour lesson when I first joined - and that only lasted 15 minutes!
Don't think I've done too bad...!

I decided to play golf as I was playing regular league and club tennis and got to the point that I only had to see the opposition and knew whether I'd win or lose and could pretty much predict the score. I was about 46 and walked off the tennis court and never played again, I've been playing golf for 16 years now

Pitch and putt on and off till gave up cricket when 40. Ripe old age of 56 now and just picked up age group gross win in Shropshire Seniors
Joined local Muni and got second hand clubs.
First handicap was 16 ,
First new set was Progen which still have in the garage .

First played 25 years ago but have probably on played for half of that time.

Played since childhood, joining my first club at the age of 10 and am now 44. Had a couple of long breaks for university and because I lost interest but generally, have played all my life, albeit infrequently, especially these last 11 years.

Since the days of when the screws where on the faces of the clubs, not all over the soles of the bloody things.

1989.
You took the game up late in life then.:mmm:

I started in 1973/4 ish, but I was so young I can't remember much about it. First clubs were a Slazenger four wood, and a half set of Eric Brown irons. The golf ball was the proper size, and the maximum mens handicap was 24.

I was 3 when you took the game up.

You needed something to do when the 3 day week was on........:)

Just the 6 years. Had never picked up a golf club before that

I started early in 2011 and hadn't swung a club before, I never even took any interest in it or watched golf on the TV! I needed to do something different and I knew a couple of people who played so I gave it a go and got the bug very quickly.

These last few years have flown by, met loads of great people on here and played so many fantastic courses up & down the country, in-fact I'd say I've played too much over that period not allowing myself any time to practice or improve, I need to get that balance right to improve my handicap although as Duncan has stated, the years are now catching up on me, wished I'd found the sport earlier :(

I think max handicap was 18 then Richard.

I played as a teenager, although not particularly well, around the low 90s. Stopped in my 20s apart from the occasional company golf day I got invited to, then stopped completely for 15-20 years until I retired 3 and a half years ago, joined a club and now play 4 or 5 times a week.

I started in my mid twenties and played for around six years but move abroad and stopped playing for about 10 years.
I have been playing again for around fifteen years since my return. Still hacking but I enjoy it.
Was playing fairly infrequently whilst my children were growing up, now they are off to Uni I can play a bit more.

Started on a nine hole Municipal pitch and putt at about age 13. Just a 7-iron and putter and some mates. Not a clue about handicaps or anything. Did that for about 3 consecutive Summers during the school hols.

Mid 20s played the odd Saturday with my brother and Dad but only 10 times a year or so. Then the odd work related corporate day through 20s & 30s before finally joining my club at age 41, sixteen years ago. Given a handicap of 26 and hadn't a Scooby about formats, proper rules or comps etc.

Regret not taking it up seriously much earlier (was in bands too busy being a rock star :D ) but now it's out playing as often as possible if not even more often. It's almost become an obsession.
