Not at all. Its one of the mad gimmicks right up there with low friction tees to drive it longer, or wacky looking cleats to help your shoes withstand the awesome torque in your swing without which you would probably corkscrew yourself into the ground. Oh, and white drivers so that you can see the club head better as it approaches the ball and so correct its path to ensure the best possible strike. The underpants that ensure your short game wont be upset by sand being splashed up your shorts when playing from a bunker, are a must though.
Whilst there is a lot of subjectivity in terms of putter choice, I do believe there is a huge benefit in being fitted in terms of length and toe hang/face balance etc.
A few putts using SAM analysis will confirm whether a putter is right for you.
A putter lesson with the one you have may be a better and cheaper starting point. If you decide to invest in a new putter, a fitting is a very insightful process, especially in a SAM lab. However it isn't a necessity. I would however strongly recommend you find somewhere you can test a putter on grass rather in a store on a carpet and the sharp cut holes that will collect a ball in
