Has a new Putter made a big difference?

I played a "Lucky Dog" by Saint Andrew Golf Co
today, worst I've putted for a long time.

At least three 3-putts and a four putt when I went for a back handed tap in and stubbed it into the ground without moving the ball.

I had an old 2 ball bought for about 30 quid so "upgraded" to a new spider a couple of years ago. At first I couldn't miss with it.
Now I interchange between them both and can't really notice a difference.
Jordan speith would be the best putter at a club using a second hand Dunlop putter.

It’s all about your last paragraph there. Mental side is obviously paramount, but it’s gotta make a huge difference to the mental side to have putter that just “feels right”. Got to directly affect the stability and consistency of your stroke too.

I’m trying to justify spending a lot of money on a new putter! 😂
One thing I didn't mention was that I bought two other putters that made no positive change at all before I found the one that did improve my putting. Since I was dabbling in the second hand market though, I was able to sell them on for not much loss.

If I was buying brand new I'd probably want some of fitting or at least a try before you buy type of thing. Then you would know if it feels right or not?

Yeah I recently got a new putter but it just feels to light and doesn’t feel stable. So I was thinking of changing it to a heavier one. Just something that makes the stroke feel more stable back and through. That alone has got to improve performance.
I don't really understand why anybody would want a lightweight putter. Wavy and wafty on the backswing are not desirable qualities at all. And the more weight there is to it, the less you have actively hit the ball, which I think is a good thing.

I tried a putter in a pro shop and it instantly felt so good. Like it was the feeling I’d been searching for. Couldn’t justify the spend at the time but it’s been on my mind since.
I ended up buying the ‘lightweight’ one because it was similar in style but at a budget price and had good reviews. But it ended up being a bit worse than the current putter.

Then the one I did want happened to pop up today and was £65 cheaper than anywhere else. so I had to do it and hit the purchase button. Just hope it feels as good as it did in the shop! 😁

Had a massive improvement last year after finally buying a putter that was correct style centre shafted non offset cobra agera. I had been told that was what I needed but being stubborn had stuck with my Scotty and spider previously.
Putts holed within 10 feet increased noticeably.

I don’t think so, I think the initial excitement and playing with it actually is the reason.. which is practice and that’s not something we do apart from maybe having a few putts before a round.
I have purchased an Axis 1 putter off eBay and it seems okay .. but the greens are a bit ropey at this time of year.

Thought I’d update the thread. I haven’t been out for a round since I got the putter due to health reasons. But I have played around with it in the house and took it to a practice green twice. And I have to say it feels like a total game changer. It just feels so good in my hands and during the swing. Accuracy has improved considerably as well as distance control. Sank a few monster putts on the practice green too. Love it.

Right now, the expense feels justifiable! And trusting my instinct that this putter was the right one based on those few seconds of feeling the putter in the pro shop feels legitimized!

Which one was it you got? I skimmed the topic again but couldn't see if you mentioned it.

Has anyone found grips to make a huge difference? I've dabbled with the thick ones but prefer pistol ones. Don't think there is a noticeable difference in putts holed but more of a mental thing.

This for me has made 100x more difference and improvement than probably 10 putter changes in last 20 years have. After all the changes, centre shafts, heel shafts, big heads, blades, tad shorter etc. Even one a few years back I went for a proper fitting for, after 6 month I reverted back to the same putter I used 20 years ago, and kept reverting back to a while after every time buying something new.

Got one of the big thick chunky super strokes put on it and it feels brilliant, genuinely first time probably ever I’ve felt content with the putter in the bag now. Which is a sickener thinking back to the amount of 2/300 quid Scotty Cameron’s when a 20 quid grip has done the trick.
