How good do you REALLY want to be?

my aims in golf are:
-to reach 18 by the end of the year
-to reach single figures in the next 3 years

as long as im able to play enough and hold it together i see its posible

18 would suit me

You and me are thinking along the same lines.

Having played off 9 for a season (last millennium) and 8 for about a week, I don't want to go back there.

I mean, there's playing to singles and there's ruining your life to play to singles. One is fun, the other not so.

I think I'd just like to reach a level where I know I'm getting everything out of my ability possible. I'm not a natural and have a pretty ugly swing, but I've never had a year where I've played regularly and made a consistent effort to improve.

Handicap wise, 11.5 might be as good as it gets. I've love to get to single figures but my new course is hugely more difficult than my last one so I'm more likely to go up, in the short term at least.

I just enjoy playing, and when I stop enjoying it I'll stop playing

Id love to get to singles.
Deep down i think the ability is there but you wouldn't think it with the shite im playing at the moment..Unhappily creeping back steadily to 17 :(.

I think I can be good enough to reach cat1, if I can convince the good swing to beat the bad one to back where it belongs.
I won't be unhappy if I don't get there.
I will be unhappy if 9 is as good as it gets.

I want to be good enough to enjoy it every time I go out to play.

I know this one! :)

My original intention was to be good enough to not embarrass myself totally playing proper courses with mates and colleagues. It all went a bit far in the end.

Is it easier to accept a bad round off 28 than 18 or 8 though?

I could accept being 6 shots over off 24, but these days that's enough to put a dent in my fun.

Improvement is always possible. So eventually I would like to get very low.

If the question is how good do you really want to be, the answer is at least scratch.

If it's how good do you think you are likely to get to with the practice time you put in, then low teens currently. Having said that, if you asked me a year ago, I'd have said 18 was a pipe dream, so you never know.

I really wanted to be back to single figures, would have settled for 10 but another case of different day same frustration so I've given up caring and playing. Nearly up to 14 and totally cheesed off that I hit the ball well and consistently (I can honestly say I put three bad swings on shots today which got the punishment they deserved) and yet can't make the numbers. I see guys spraying it left and right, nobbling on the ground and three putting. "what did you score? - 6 for 2 points". Whats the point. I might as well take 5 iron off every tee and just play for a 5 on every hole and be done with it but would it be golf and would I enjoy it. Given up any aspirations on the handicap front now - I guess 18 would be good for me right now

I want to be good enough to enjoy it every time I go out to play.

Impossible.

Not really, when I didnt have a handicap last year I enjoyed a round that now, off 14, I would be frustrated with.

Therefore I have to keep improving to keep enjoying it as I get better so there is always a drive there!

I am on borrowed time to get much better. Would like to get back to single figures though.

Still have two ambitions, to get a hole in one, and to break my age. Does mean i will have to keep playing until i am at least 90. :D :D

My handicap goal in my lifetime is to get to a +2 at my home course (which is on the USGA handicap system) which probably equates to about scratch on the CONGU system. The reason that +2 is my goal is that the best player at my club has always hovered around there and I want to be the best player at the club one day!

Im currently a 4 on the CONGU system and my USGA handicap is at 2.9, though I haven't put any scores in since last year.

I know that its a hell of a long way off but I believe that I can do it if I put the time and effort in. I need to improve in every aspect of my game to get there but my biggest barriers are my iron play and my lack of ability to concentrate, while my short game and driving are probably the closest to where they need to be.

By the End of 2011 I want to have a handicap. By the end of next year I would like to be high teens. By the time Im 30(4 years) I would love to be in single figures. I play once a week and practice 3/4 times a week.
