How do you think GM reviews stand up against the Competition.

Im not sure about anyone else but i tend to check out a lot of reviews before i actually buy something....Its something iv always done and probably always will......I find that i place a lot of trust in some of the sites i visit but i dont take them for full face value either..

There are also one or 2 video sites that i visit where the clubs or whatever im looking at are put through their paces....
I feel that GM lack a little in this area in regards to some of the competition....I rarely find that i come to the GM site to reviews a particular club or set of irons and instead am drawn elsewhere, where there is a more detailed and thorough review of the piece of equipment.....

I know the best way is to get out and hit them yourself but not everyone can avail of these kind of services...
Take for instance and this is only an example but here is GolWRX's review of Ping's G20's.....http://www.golfwrx.com/2011/12/24/ping-g20-irons-a-players-sgi-editor-review/.

And here is GM's.....http://www.golf-monthly.co.uk/equipment/reviews/irons/129074/1/ping-g20-irons-review.html......

Honstly I find them average in comparison to the rest of the magazine. I know that opinions on clubs are very subjective and the GM approach is to give the facts and let you make your own mind up but still would prefer a little more insight. If I want an opinion on a club I tend to post on here to get some idea from people who have used them for a month or 2 especially as most on here are not affraid to admit that they have made a dud purchase (the posting on the for sale section tends to give that away).

I tend to do a bit of research online but nothing compares to trying them yourself. I was dead keen on the R11 driver last year. It had good reviews across the board but when it came to hitting it I didn't like it. I don't think GM are the worse. You should try TG where its the same faces everytime and Ping, Cally, TM and Mizuno will win their gold awards. What about the likes of MD, Benross etc. There can be a lack of objectivity to a lot of magazine reviews and to be fair there are strong arguments why they will never come out and slate a product but that is why I try stuff in my local AG and demo days. One mans meat and all that

The problem with reviewing gear is that one driver, for instance, may be great in the hands of "A" but shite in the hands of "B". Does this make the club a good one or not?

GM's response is that they don't review sub-standard equipment - and there isn't a lot of it these days.

Knowing that Tappers can smack the i20 driver long and straight doesn't mean Jezz can so rating it out of 5 or 10 is irrelevent.
What the reviews give you is an insight into the club so you can go along to AG, DG, NB etc etc and try them to see if you like them.

If a faceless techie on a forum gave you 1000 words about how good driver A is over driver B would it make you go out and buy A?

Not really Murg but i would consider it over a paragraph full of mixed words that you can find on any of the manufacturers websites....

The main one that i do a lot of surfing on is Mark Crossfields site....Ok he's a PGA qualified Pro but he gives very good comparisons and descriptive reviews on literally everything.
Check out his site...You'll see the difference between the reviews....

GM went to a whole pile of trouble to change the old website to the new one and to revamp the Magazine but in the 3 or so years that iv been buying the magazine and been on the Forum review content has stayed pretty similar.
