OK. Today was a 4BBB medal. Best nett score of each player to count. 3/4 h'cap.
I played to h'cap, so did my partner.
We scored nett par (exactly) and "would" have made 36 points.
I thought we played OK, I came in on 6 holes, he came in on 6 holes and we were both "even" for the remaining 6.

5 pairs were 7 under nett BB off 3/4.

How come we were almost last in the results?

Because lots of people did better? :D

To be honest, I try to avoid those competitions as they are alaways won by those that love their handicaps and wouldnt change them for the world!

It's a tough format. HTL and I won our Jubilee Cup with 44 pts and we were 4 clear. To be fair Hywel (as I said at the time) had a stellar day off 13 and I cam in on the odd occasion he had a bad hole. In essence we gelled perfectly. The rest of the field from 2nd onwards were all tightly packed with 40's and 39's. If there is a higher handicapper playing well and still getting a decent number of shots then 40+ is on

Same format as the morning of our captain's day last month. Between my partner and I we played literally out of our skins to come in with 44pts. We weren't too shocked to see a 52pts stuck up on the board by a 28/24 handicap pairing though. It's a joke of a format unless off scratch and greensomes with 1/2 allowance is much fairer. That was won in the afternoon with 39pts by a 2/6 handicap pairing who we were in the group behind. To say they played AWESOME was an understatement!

If a pairing from your place came in with 52pts on your Captains Day then I would suggest that your H/C sec isn't doing his job. Also the members should be boycotting the event. It's a waste of time if clowns like those two ruin it for everyone else and are allowed to. 52pts is a joke score.

Me and my partner racked up 39points earlier in the season and were surprised to see that we had finished 8th with the winners with 44points.

Although we did win a greensome comp with 42 points with half of combined h/c, a few weeks earlier. We have another 4BBB comp this Sunday, actually I quite like them.

I have to say, I do enjoy 4BBB games. I never expected to be anywhere near the leaders (neither of us tends to blow hot/cold/hot/cold all the way round) but I was surprised at the scores.
I guess that ideally one player of the pair makes a safe counting score every hole and therefore making nett par over all 18 ought to be fairly straightforward. To get better than that, the pair needs to make par nett birdies; every hole you do this another shot under par.
Clearly some pairs are going to play well "off each other", but the nett scores were lower (in general, over the field) than I would have expected.
Maybe it's simply a game that suits higher h'cap players who often go par/double/par/double and not the steady "bogey" golfer.

Not when you look through their cards as I nosily did and saw that if you'd added up their gross scores each as in medal play then they both actually played at or slightly over their handicaps. It's why I consider it a joke format if handicapped at 3/4 allowance. Point in case is our 1st is a par 5 and the 28 handicapper parred it for 4 points. On the 2nd a par 3 he carded a 9 for 0 but his partner carded a 4 for 3 points. Add up that sort of thing all the way round and 52 isn't "that" high a score.

Think before you spout rubbish as I wouldn't be a handicap secretary if you paid me to be. Their job is a thankless one and idiots always gob off before thinking.

Dont get to caught up with Handicap, score is more important, perhaps the course was playing very easy (when the ground is hard most courses play alot lot shorter), and you didn't score enough points.

Playing to your Handicap isnt a good score if everyone else beats theres.

This is a bit of an issue in most of the comps at my club. To be in with any chance of winning a stapleford comp then you need over 40 points and even medals need a round of 4-5 under your handicap.

To be homest 36 points isn't particularly good for a 4BBB (even off 3/4).
You need to gel well with your partner, ie, getting birdies on different holes, having gross par as your worst score on any hole etc.
Sometimes you can do it, othertimes you can't.
Sometimes you both birdie the same hole or bogey the same hole. Then at the end of the round finish on 36 points.

Yes...I totally agree. I didn't expect us the be anywhere near; the surprise was just how many pairs managed to "gel" and get so far under par.
Looking back, I think I played too conservatively with it being a medal. We (one of us) HAD to return a score so going for glory when my partner wasn't guaranteed safe was an issue. I was fairly happy with the way we played....

Of course, you are spot on.

I'd be interested to see some of the best cards (not that it would happen).....I reckon the 5 pairs all tied at the top must have made some cracking scores on the tougher holes.

It never fails to amaze me, on here, where people only get beat by 'bandits'!!

My partner and I 'walked' a 2 ball better ball regional qualifying comp, to the obvious disappoinment of one of our playing partners - so obvious that he turned his chair away from our table in the huff! His partner meantime scored our respective rounds onto a coaster and handed it to him, showing neither of us beating our respective handicaps BUT we had the luck to gel well.

The guy made a dash to the bar and apologised in a liquid fashion and showed his disappointment at behaving in a small minded fashion - including standing up applauding as we went up for our prize.

This betterball format can throw up strange results if the golfing Gods dictate gelling on the day, the opposite can be the case if all players in the group get their birdies at the same holes.

I never mentioned the word bandit. NO. Absolutely not.

Interestingly, I did actually get to see some cards....and the picture is perfectly clear. The winning pair managed to card a great score between them. The fact that SO many pairs achieved this is testament to the pairs ability to play well ("gel") off one another.

Somewhat interestingly, neither player has managed to complete a stableford without at least 2, sometimes 3 N/Rs since the beginning of the year (according to masterscoreboard.com)

I however have completed every hole with a score in stablefords this season. So, I am steady, they are patchy. I don't brandish the name "bandit" in any direction.

:)

Exactly what happened with HTL and I. He had a great day and I just came in on the holes he faded on (the last 6 or so really). In truth he'd done most of the hard work and had played the front nine in only a few over anyway. That said we did have one hole (our 4th) where we only managed 1 point between us as we both made bogey. It's just one of those formats that if you gel then silly scores are possible.

I'm sure I read on here that a 4BBB was won once with a score of -18.

The pair just clicked - it was their day.

I may have dreamed that score up though - I've been at the absynth.... :D
