How crap do you have to play before you're really disappointed?

I'm astonished at some of these replies.
We have ongoing threads about bandits and how often you should play to handicap, then we get this one and some people are unhappy if they don't break handicap.

Maybe I just have low expectations of myself

I'm mostly happy or unhappy based on how I hit the ball, but score-wise...

8 hc (course par 72)
ecstatic with breaking 80
very happy 80-82
happy with 83-85
disappointed with 86-89
Only going over 90 leaves me disgusted at myself.

Interesting... a spread from about 2 over h/cap to about 6.. can't see how 2 over h/cap is exactly time to slit your wrists but 4-6 over seems to be a mark most of us would be p*ssed off with.. regardless of handicap!

It seems something like this might be true(ish)..

0-4 h/cap 3 over is crap
5-9 h/cap 4 over is crap
10-15 h/cap 5 over is crap

High expectations we all have

Interesting isn't it, anyone 10 and below is pee'd off shooting 50% over h'cap, 15 h'cappers with 33% over and 20 h'cappers just 25% over. Considering the low h'cappers have a right to be more consistent, do the high h'cappers need to get a bit more realistic?

Find myself agreeing with the general consensus.

Score wise I'd say 4-6 over h/p depending on conditions. If it's stableford I hate getting less than 30 points.

But a lot depends on how I've played. if I've generally played well but been unlucky that's not so bad as shooting the same score playing cr@p. However, blowing a good round down the stretch is always hard to take.

pretty much agree with Region3 ha ha, i play off 15,and not to bothered if i play well, and score badly, sounds odd but it does happen.

Trying to maintain the phlegmatic glass half full Homer I promised. I've not played a lot of comps so far this year and those I've entered I've either been injured or played rubbish. Even in the roll ups I've not looked like getting the pot. HOWEVER, the ball striking tee to green is begiining to click. I've started to see shreds of a short game and I'm putting well. I can't quite mould them all into one round. I've had a few 27 or so pointers but there have been say 4-5 duffed short game shots and generally the scores haven't resembled the way I'm playing.

It is still early in the season and I've said I'll happily go back to 14 while we'll getting the short game up to speed but fancy myself to have a good season and once it clicks it is going to do so big style. I get upset when I've played a crap round but know I haven't swung the club well. That to me is different to getting annoyed if I shoot over a certain score. Swing badly and you won't get good numbers anyway so for me its about trying to do the right things on the course this year and worry about the score when it gets entered in PSI after

Golf is golf - not too bothered about shockers but happy with good under hcp/css scores. If I play bad then there is always next time and truly bad rounds can get written off in my mind and used as practice rounds where trying stuff is fun. Never really build myself up for comps so I don't get too down, my family is at home and i'm happy. I know what I am capable of and I know I can't do it every time so acceptance is the key for me. An absolute shocker once in a while is cathartic anyway.

Anything that doesnt get me a cut in comps so over 97 (par 69), unfortunately this happens in most comps hence only 1 cut so far for a 94. (a shame as I am always around 90-92 in social rounds :( )

Unfortunately I have put too much pressure on myself in comps hence the crap scores, new mantra this year is swing easy and what will be will be :)

Nearly exactly the same here Gibbo. I have just changed my grip to overlapping from baseball so score in tomorrows and sundays comps could be bad ones. I dont get to hung up on what score I shoot(I cant at my level) as long as Im making good clean contact. I would rather shoot 30 points and have a few lip outs and dodgy bounces/bad lies instead of shooting 38 points with thin shots that go within 2 foot etc.

When I am consistently missing the fairway or the greens.

Happened today and was only playing with my dad so I did take out some anger on a dead branch and tree trunk :/

mine is based on how I know I can play... good example was FoA last saturday on the arden course, 1st hole - great drive, nailed hybrid but caught greenside bunker, brilliant sand save and 1 putt for a par, parred 2 more holes in the round and nearly parred the 18th (3 putted for a bogey grr)! Yet as a 28 handicapper I am probably considered crap

This year I tell thee, it's gonna tumble ;)

Ditto.

Given that you're not supposed to play to handicap very often, then 2-3 over nett should be relatively satisfying. 4-6 a bit off perhaps and only "disappointing" if you're a bit over +6 nett. Wrist-cutting territory shouldn't be until your at least 10 over nett. Surely?

I don't see the point in getting too hung up with a score below expectations.

What I find frustrating is playing well except for one or two blow up holes. Or scoring 22 points on the front nine then only 12 or 13 points on the back, and vice-a-versa the next time.

I think that accepting the fact we can't always play how we would always like to is the key.

And James, you know you can do better, so come on get yer finger out. :ears::fore::p

There's no really definitive answer although in general I'd say if I'm not in the buffer I'm disappointed.
A lot depends on how you hit the ball on the day.

Ha! Thanks Chris... I am trying :(

The back injury thing has had me pretty stressed and I've been playing quite a bit trying to find something... I'm knackered mentally and physically now - played today and was asleep at 6.30pm, anyone that knows me knows that isn't me. Feeling positive though.... just tired.

Try playing after a broken left ankle! New insight as to how the subconscious works!

All sweet now though (until next round!).

As for he OP question.. Any +0.1 is disappointing. 6 over cap is dire. Golf is such a punishing masochistic game!
