• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

How big are you?

Makes me laugh when people say they do this and they do that. Yeah..ok..once a season in ideal conditions maybe , which doesnt make you a 300 yard driver of the ball.

I wouldnt call myself a long hitter but there's only a small handful who can keep up in our club i'd say. Now I went to Ping for a driver fitting and my average came out at 250 carry with a small (13 yds) run out. Not bad I thought as it was early May and i'd been driving for 2 hours and got there 2 minutes before my appointment.

I can say with no word of doubt that this distance is spot on for me (250ish carry on a well struck drive in good conditions) , what it does after that depends on the ground conditions and not how well ive hit the ball. Yes they have run-out 60,70,80,100 yards through the hard grounds we've had this summer but so what. Its still only a 250 carry and probs will only be a 240 carry and a plugged lie in the winter

Come on guys get in the real world not this fantasy world where one shot and a long run-out makes you a tour pro...jeez :D

Seems like the only realistic people on here are the low h/c guys and a few others who have some common sense :p

I’m not what I would call a long hitter of the ball, but I’ve hit the odd drive sweetly. For instance at the par 5 13th (500 yards Plus) at Tain last Saturday I must have hit my drive 350 + with a howling gale behind, wedge in, still had a 6 though. The chap whole won the club champs this year got a hole in one on a 377 yard par 4 this year.I'm not sure he would say he hits his drives 377
regularly.
I suppose everyone can hit a long drive from time to time but for me its al about consistency and hitting the fairway. It also depends on the weather too. I played with a mate at Brora a couple of months ago who plays off 4 and normally hits his ball 30 yards past mine on his home course, but into a 4 club headwind I was 20-30 yards past him. I have a very low ball flight and he a high.

Ignoring what the launch monitor tells me i been carrying it a shade over 250 SC measured from the pitchmark.

I like to know the carry distance more than the total so i know if i could fly the bunker or brook etc.

Our first is a 235 carry to get onto the second section of fairway so as long as i know i can carry such things thats good enough for me

Are you talking carry or roll out???

Carry - no idea and I don't care. As long as it's in play then that'll do for me.

With roll out - no idea and I don't care. As long as it's in play then that'll do for me.

;)

I won the long drive last week. 260 carry and 10 yards bounce no wind to speak of on to a wet up hill fairway!!!

I then missed the green with a wedge, thinned the chip and had to hole a 4 footer for a bogey!!!

I agree with the chip and putt comments!!!

I have been playing golf in Australia for the past 4 years on (in Summer) very dry fast running fairways and I have seen a 300 yard drive maybe 3-4 times. Not from me I might add. If I am on song I hit it in the 230-240 yard range. I have also played Sydney coastal courses in howling winds and never even come close to 300yards downwind.

I'm a lightwieght off the Tee. 250 is a very good drive for me, 230 is most probably my average.

I played with a lad i kinda know from my club last week - we have a 530 yard par 5 where he hit a 3 wood leaving 210 to the middle, he hit a 6 iron....to the middle.....i hit driver, 4 iron and a wedge! I won best gross for the whole round though.

Totally agree. Club champion at my last place plays off 1 and when I played with him he never hit it further than 270 yards. His strength was his chipping and putting...man!!!... he could sure chip from anywhere. It was a joy to watch as he never seem flustered and I loved playing with him. There were a couple of bombers there but I did not like playing with them as all they talked about was how far they hit it. It was impressive and all but the conversation and company of the club champion made for a better round of golf for me.

Have hit 250 but usually 225ish on a good drive. I'm big but not too supple and have no backswing. A few months ago we had an Open comp and one of the holes had to longest drive prize and it was won at 300 yards out of about 150 players.

Good for you. and off 6....even better.

I went all the way to sunny Yorkshire (not Mid-Yorks) for a day out with a society. The long drive hole was the last, so I thought I'd give it a whack. I was 8 yards short of the longest drive (264 vs. 272) and dead centre. Probably the best drive I've ever hit. I've managed further (on links or hard running ground) but probably not *better* as it were.

Almost contrived to make a bogey too....almost....

Look on youtube for Remax long drive. 400+ yard drives, not all from monster yanks. The young canadian is only of average build. Mind boggling

Personally I'd put my self at 260-270 with near enough no roll on the ball (My shots go high and just drop) At the range I drive into the rough behind the 250 marker but the range is on a steady slope upwards. Means nothing if I cant hit a fairway or follow up a good tee shot with a good approach shot. My most used club in the bag is my 9 iron which I use anywhere from 140-170

That was the problem HTL had at Ascot. Kept running out of fairway. I'd rather be 230 and still on the short stuff. Another point about being a lightweight, it means I get to shoot first into the green in matchplay and especially if I get a shot that can put real pressure on. I've even been known to do it once in a while too

Leftie hit a 300yd drive yesterday,... so there's hope for EVERYONE!

Admittedly he's 1368 years old and it's the first time he's managed to connect with the sweetspot with a 40mph tail wind... but it's a start!

Just a question ;

How do you work out how long you are with the driver?

Is it averaging every single tee shot, including tops, pulls, slices etc? In which case I'm about 180-190 yards. Maybe. Maybe 150 yards if you looked too closely, I'm really not sure

Is it averaging decent and half decent shots, which would the sort I would hit nine times out of ten if I were consistant enough? A sort of decent swing, but not just including the perfect strikes. Now I'm about 220-230.

Is it what I'm capable of if I really try and am lucky enough to hit it out of the screws, and using a GPS to verify? 249 yards.

Or as above, using the 150 markers on the course? 270 yards.
