Home wifi

I currently have BT Halo 1 (infinity) which gives a 69mb download speed. No problems around the house, I work from home connected to the office vpn and remoting on to my office systems. Use Teams constantly for video calls. Wedge junior is pretty much gaming or streaming constantly, and Mrs wedge is streaming her tv from Japan. Never had any connection issues or problems with sluggish response on the wifi.

Did speak to Bt today and have upgraded to full fibre with 150mb download, for an extra couple of quid a month. I probably didn't need to, but for the price difference, it seemed silly not too. Fibre to property and get their new smart hub with it too. Only have to wait until mid March for it?

I have Halo 1 with no problem, are they guaranteeing fibre from the cabinet to your house?

Yes, although had an interesting conversation with the young sales girl trying to understand how they were going to connect the house to the fibre point on the edge of the property without digging the garden up. Apparently they "just put a box on the outside wall where the phone line goes in" and then it's fibre to house. "How does it connect to the fibre point" I asked. "It connects to the existing line" she said. "Surely that's copper" says I, "the fibre is to the cabinet at the end of the close, doesn't the box need to connect to the fibre extension at the edge of the property". "No, they just put the box o. The wall". I gave up in the end, although she assured me they do not need to dig anything up.

They can run fibre along the telegraph poles, that's how we get fttc into the house. No chance of getting gfast as you need to within 300m of the cabinet. Cabinet is 3000M, so max speed is 80 but I get 19 to 24, annoying as I can get 4k UHD on prime.

Sorry I digressed, before we redocorated the study, which is slap bang in the middle of the ground floor, we got a guy, ex openreach, to run the cable from the pole to the external wall and pull it through, we now have perfectly even Wi-Fi throughout the house, albeit not great.

We're less than 50m from the cabinet, which is less than a mile from the exchange. They've already extended the fibre to the property boundary, so hopefully should hopefully be pretty straight forward and quick to install in the house. Just a shame it's a 10 week lead time.

My ISP is PlusNet but the router they supplied was rubbish so I configured my old BT Home Hub 6 to work with PlusNet.

However the kids are constantly complaining about the WIFI so I have just bought a TP Link Modem/Router which I'm hoping to run in Modem only mode.

Also bought TP Link Deco S4 system which I'm hoping to use as the router.

I read a bit about it this morning and it seems it will work. Just need to wait until tomorrow to set it up and find out.

All arrived today and easy to setup following reading a few articles beforehand. Everything working great and much better coverage than before. Biggest time was re-connecting all the devices. We have 38 devices currently connected to a home network.

Had BT FTTP when we were on Shenley Lodge, was excellent, dont think it dropped out once and speeds were consistently high
