My mother-in-law got her renewal quote today for her home insurance, standard stuff, buildings & contents, accidental damage, no excess.
Home is a 2 bed terraced bungalow, quote was for £185.60.
She's very old fashioned, pays up front, won't have credit and likes to go to the branch as the staff are lovely and always looked after her.
Unfortunately she's ill at the moment so I persuaded her to let me look online and see what I could get.
Long story short, got the same cover with the same company for £96.01! Saving £89.59

Nearly half the price, I phoned the branch who'd sent the quote and was told it didn't surprise them as they can't match their company online offers in store.

How many other old people are getting ripped off by this scam.

It's not just the elderly. We used Sainsburys for home insurance for a number of years and noticed it creeping up. Spoke to the Bank and we got it for half the price and told that it was exactly the same underwriters.

my home insurance buildings and contents has come down this year, about £3.50 a week, I'm happy with that, so will renew some time next week

Most banks will also offer a discount when your renewal comes through - just need to call them up as the renewals are sent out automatically, I see many customers who have no idea that they can do that but I also see many who think that saving money per month is more important then actually protecting their belongings. It's not all about cost.

I agree it's not all about cost, but when the same company can't give you the same policy in store, that's ridiculous!

Absolutely I agree - where I work we offer different cover depending on what channel you choose to set up your policy, as in branch we will advise you what the correct cover would be where as online or telephone it's normally a tick box application. We're able to offer different prices accordingly and if you chose to set up online with no human interaction it's easier for us to discount the policy as its costs us very little to actually set up.

It's not just home insurance, the same for Motor insurance or Utility bills, all the companies rely on people who just renew every year on standard rates and don't shop around for better deals.
