Just reading Neillbro's thread, and well done to him. It interested me that there are some pretty tidy golfers responding and saying that they are still hole in one virgins, my thought is why do some people regardless of handicap get several and yet others (even pro's) never manage it. I have heard of people getting 10+, and have a friend who got 2 in three weeks. I am in the middle and have had 3 to date.

Is it to do with living a pure life ? (I doubt it )? How many have you had or if not how close have you come?

The pro's dont do it that often... which leads me to believe its just sheer luck. Yes its a well struck shot but your hitting a spot so minute on a green its impossible to say you aimed for it.

It's got to be more luck than anything, surely. Everyone can say that they obviously intend to try and get the ball in the hole, but there are so many variables involved - wind conditions, ground conditions, a kind bounce etc, that it's either your day or it's not.

Oh, and I've had one, but I don't care if it never happens again!!

I think to get one, it must be down to luck, but since I have had 3, there must be some skill in it. Afterall, once is lucky, twice a coincidence, more than twice.....

Always remember having a debate on this , if you hit it to within 6" its a great shot , if you hole it its lucky ..? never understood that..if you hit it far enough & straight enough its a good shot full stop..
Never had one , in my old club the 3rd is 125yrd par 3 of an elevated tee , water in front water & trees behind , hit a peach about 5foot past one day , spun back (no idea how) hit the pin & sat on the lip , no idea how it spun or stayed out , will keep plugging on ..

No, only perverts get them.

How many did you say you had? ....

Sorry for delaying in responding old chap, switching between this forum, S&M perverts weekly MILF's christmas special & gardeners world.

I have had 3, other than that never had one that stayed on the lip. (hope thats not considered pervy)

The ultimate aim of your irons are to put the ball in the hole, I was told when I had lessons as a youngster.
If you are aiming in the right direction and put a decent swing with the right iron to make the distance to the target then you have every right to a hole in one. A little fortunate but still, you had to hit it in the right place.
Now, then there is those that mishit a wood up the 150 yarder and it bobbles its way onto the green with a big kick towards the hole, rattles the flagstick and drops, those are the lucky ones.

I've had one, and it was lucky. Really lucky. Scabbed a 7 iron uphill, rolled on to the green, out of sight (as in you can't see the hole). Got there and assumed it was through the back, when my pairs partner looks in the hole and bursts out laughing. Yep, 149 yards, and it didn't get above 6 foot! ;)

That is lucky!

Played in a comp a couple of mionths ago with an old irish fella at my club, par 3 15th he thinned one off the tee, it travelled about 6 foot of the ground, I thought this is 20 yards through the green, hit the face of the raised green, then hit the flag about 3 foot up doing about 90 miles an hour and went straight in.

We all started cheering, but the guy didnt even batter and eye lid, turns out it was his 9th hole in one

Some people have all the luck

If the ball dies into the hole it's a good shot. If it had run 20 ft away if the hole wasn't there it's just luck.

I witnessed a straight in hole in one once. If it wasn't for the hole it would bounced on the green and into the bunker at the back. Wrong shot - best result.

Did anyone ever see that hole in one a couple of years ago on the USPGA tour, guy hooks one off the tee, hits the tree next to the green, rolls down 2 or 3 branches and drops onto the edge of the green, then rolls about 20 foot across the green straight in the hole

Think he got a nice new Lexus for his trouble too
