Hole in One - Why are some luckier than others??

got one in our 4 ball- I played the first tee-shot, 1 bounce then in the hole.

Captain came up and wanted to play through so it didn't count:one:

Been single figure h'cap for most of the 44 years I've been playing. Took 42 yrs to get one. Mate has never been lower than 14 h'cap and has had 6!! He doesn't hit far but hits very straight... maybe that's the answer.

Sorry for delaying in responding old chap, switching between this forum, S&M perverts weekly MILF's christmas special & gardeners world.

I have had 3, other than that never had one that stayed on the lip. (hope thats not considered pervy)

I had thought that you would have said rim, more than lip.

Three months in playing and I had one. The shot was going right of the flag, lucky bounce left and straight in. My playing partners and the 4 ball on the next tee all jumped for joy. I honestly did not realise at the time it was something people may never get so was not really that excited. Picked the ball out of the cup walked to the next tee with ace ball in hand and spanked it into the never never. My brother had a hole in one on the same course later that same year. His never left the pin, pitched a foot from the hole and straight in. Neitehr of us have come close since. That was 8 years ago. Funny game.

I've often thought about this.

Some players take dead aim at the flag, I'd say I'm just working out the best chance to get it on the green.

Therefore, I reckon I'm less likely to ever get one.

(if that makes sense)...

i've been close a few times and witnessed a very close call.never witnessed one but back in august my playing partner knocked it to literally 2".i couldn't believe how close it was and it was a blind pin so we didn;t get the chance to witness it go that close.

i've holed out for a few eagles from 100yrds+ so i reckon it's only a matter of time, you could say it's luck but i reckon if you play often enough then the chances are it may happen.....you can't say it will happen but i'm confident enough that i'll get one eventually.i haven't played since 1999 and even then i had only been playing for 3 yrs as a junior so i believe if i keep playing then it's going to happen.

i do have the next best thing though and it is rather funny...

when i was a junior i was waiting on the 7th tee at callander.back then it was roughly 230 yrds and the tee shot is blind so you had to wait for the bell.the bell went and i tee'd off,i leaked it a bit right and knew it was heading towards where the bell was.

when i got over the hill i could see the 2 old boys looking in the heavy rough to the right of the bell, the old fella tells me the ball hit his leg and presumed it went in the rough.so we searched for the ball for about 5 mins before he pulled it from his pocket......he was amazed along with his partner but i thought he was taking the mick.

anyway, the next day i was teeing off from the 6th medal tee's when he comes over from the 17th fairway and starts to undo his belt buckle...."hold on a minute" i thought but he revealed the biggest bruise you have ever seen...

so maybe thats the closes i will ever get to a hole in 1 :)

Never had one in 20-odd years of playing off or close to single figures. Never seen anyone have one either. I don't belive they exist. You are all liars (and deviants) :mmm:

The closest ive ever got was a foot from the pin, was heading dead straight for the cup but it had just poured with rain so got no roll just stopped dead on the green, was absolutely gutted

I've mentioned my unofficial Ace - I was the only person on the course!!

Had a few close ones, closet was about 3 inches...

CVG had one a couple of years back and at my last club I witnessed the same guy ace the same hole 2 weeks running...

I have two mates who both have hole in ones to their name, they play golf no more than a couple of times a year and either of their shots went more than 10ft off the ground, one even rolled through a bunker on it's way to the hole. I have hit hundreds of good shots into par 3s and never had one. I've never even holed my second shot from the fairway.

If you want to try to convince me hole in ones aren't complete and total luck, go ahead but this might be a long threadY

Never had one and as par 3's are my nadir I can't see this record getting broken anytime soon. I'm not convinced it is all down to luck. There has to be a degree of skill in the majority to get the club right and hit a good shot. If it pitches and rolls in from there it is no different to doing the same thing and holing out from the fairway. I'll risk the splinters and sit firmly on the fence saying 50% luck and 50% skill

I played in a home club match last year and a guy from my club playing in the group behind had two holes in one in the same round. I saw them both go in from the next tee boxes.

I had my first this year. 180 yards on a par three, struck with a sweet 5 iron, it seemed to land then roll up and into the hole as if in slow motion. Great feeling.
