Since i'm playing Muirfield this afternoon, i've realised i've probably never hit out of any bunker quite so tight or deep as i'm very likely to find myself in.

Any tips on playing a high flop shot from a bunker?

Open the club up, aim left, be aggresive and early with your wrist hinge and hit it with everything you've got.

Or come out backwards.

Play well, you lucky bugger ;)

good idea... but i like a challenge.

It's funny, i've played a few links courses of a very high caliber now, but i think the images i've seen of the bunkers at Muirfield are in a different league, and a hell of a lot more plentiful!

do you not drop within one club length no closer to the hole, so if that one club length is still within the bunker, then you have to drop back into the bunker again?

ok... just did some reading on this rule... everyone should probably read this!!! I've never even thought of taking an unplayable drop from a bunker, but now knowing the rule, is there any point?

The player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable.
If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke:
(a) Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or (b) Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the holeand the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or (c) Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole. Penalty for Breach of Rule:
Match play — Loss of hole; Stroke play — Two strokes.
If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under Clause a, b or c.

If he elects to proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker.
The ball may be lifted and cleaned when proceeding under this Rule.

Not a problem. Your bunker shots probably go this high anyway, you just haven't noticed as you watch it check near the pin.

i've holed out from a bunker a couple of times, but more often than not i'm just happy to get it back in play.
