High handicappers who hit the ball well and far...

I'm a sceptic at the best of times, and I will admit that until recently, anyone saying they drive 'X' distance was a little generous with their measurements.

However, with the proliferation of GPS devices, I'm more inclinded to believe them.

When I recently posted a 260 and 270 yard drives with my 3 wood on here, I did qualify the situation. They were elavated tees and downhill fairways. Yet I still came in for questioning, despite the distances being mearsured by GPS.

My average with that club is alot shorter. I know that, and you do as well. It's not uncommon to top it 50 yards in front of me. That's why I'm a high h'apper. I'm just not consistent enough!

We all have the ability (ne, luck) to belt it a great distance. It's just not very often for us high h'cappers.

I'm with the OP on this one. Give us a break occasionally. We do sometimes hit a good shot. Just not very often. After all it's those rare good shots that keep us coming back week after week.

ps. Unless measured and qualified, I'll still remain slightly sceptical though, regardless of the players h'cap.

As for the score. gross or net I'm not bothered. Just qualify it.

I dont see why a high handicapper cant hit it a mile.

I am built very powerfully and when I want to really lash one, I can put it into next week.

Myself and MVP use the same range and we regularly carry range balls into the back fence, I have put a knackered old ProV down and carried over the fence, the fence is 260yds.

I have (with other forummers) hit 300yd 3-woods without wind assistance.

But distance isnt everything. On the course I am much happier hitting my average drive of 260 or so with 3/4 power and finding the fairway than having a total blast at it everytime and hitting 1/4 fairways.

I dont know why people havent seen many high h/c players spank the ball miles from time to time as often as I have.

Most high h/cappers have the equipment and swing, it just needs to come togeather now and then with timing and strike.
I tend to believe someone first because like today when I hit a few over 300 and one 365 because of the wind as well as a great strikes, gaining 50 to 90 yds on my regular drives purely because of the wind and posting it relating to Tigers 225 yd 7 iron thread as examples of wind effect.
Yet still the disbelievers are out there.

For as many people who get their distances a little wrong or exaggerate their distances there will be an equal number who wont have it simply because they cant do it themselves. ;)

You guys are lucky. A few people here have seen me play so I wont bore you with any claims of driving it 300 yds, but when I play in tournaments, I get out driven by 30-50 yds all day, and I'm not short and they are more than often straight.
Wish I was young and daft again :D
Having read all of this thread now (took ages) if I was to sum it up, most not all high handicapers hit it shorter and most not all low handicapers hit it further. no surprise really :)

This annoys me almost as much as people, when asked what their score was, give a net score...pathetic. If you took 95 shots (god help you) say 95, not 68 or 69 or whatever the net score is. I don't know your handicap so a net score means nothing to me.

I fail to see how giving or using a net score is pathetic, I thought thats what handicaps where for to have extra shots depending on level of ability?

Giving a net score isn't pathetic, but it sure is self deluding.
Don't get in the habit of always giving your net score, all it means is you played a round of golf better or worse than your handicap.
I had a gross 83 (net70) last week.
What did I shoot- 83!

As a hacker of the highest order I can say that....

Sometimes.....

just sometimes....

I find the sweetspot and it flies

That's why I keep playing it feels superb!

Do I do it often? Of course not but I do do it every now and then, sometimes for an entire hole :D

So yeah we hackers can do the 300 yard thing we'd just like to do it more.

I would love to see a 300 yard drive.
I was at Ascot to witness Mike's longest drive win, and Jeez that looked a long way from the tee. I didn't get near it, and it was measured at just over 250???
I smacked a superb drive down the first at Leatherhead on Sunday. Best drive I hit all day. Par 5 off the whites at 481 yards. I was left 208. So my drive went approx 273.
That was my Sunday best. I guess I average about 240 if I'm playing well.

On your post you said "does anyone believe me" so I think you were setting yourself up for reply you got. If you looked at my post carefully I said I didn't believe you but as I wasn't there I'd have to take your word for it. As such I'd have to assume your word to be honest and so you hit it as far as you said you did. End of in my opinion. No more to say on the matter.

I am a short hitter and so I only average around 220 with a driver and Sunday best for me would be around 245-250 although I managed to fluke a 260 last week downwind. I've never claimed to hit it xx yards

Not really gonna help after monthly medal in the 19th is it??

So Parmo, what your after is bragging rights leaning up against the bar?

No, not at all, the Handicap system puts on a level playing field and so we are all judged off scratch is all I am saying rather than everyone in the comp saying their gross when not everyone knows each others hcp, it makes sense to discuss the medal or comp in terms of net rather than gross. I know most members of my club and its easier to discuss net than gross after a comp, I would have thought it a tad obvious. If in a friendly or hcp round I talk gross.

I Played with a 20 h/capper today in a strong wind some par 4s driver, straight into trouble i took 5 iron kept it in play with a med or short iron into the green,This guy was going bonkers cos he was always in trouble, couldn't get his head round it when we came off the course he had 26 points i had 40.It does not matter how far you hit your drive you have got to think about keeping it in play, making your next shot count, when we were talking in the bar after the round he said the next time he plays(tmoz weds medal) he will take the driver out of his bag.Distance is not the key,Posistion is the KING. :D

Hmm, interesting thread.

i.m.o. anyone who hits is miles and plays off a high figure doesn't hit it well.....

I play with a few guys that outdrive me by miles, trouble is, at the end of the game, they've taken more shots than me. :)

I find very little correlation between distance and h'cap in reality. I know players lower and higher than me who hit the ball shorter and longer....mostly longer..... :)
