High handicapper - potential daft idea.

quite a bad sway.

I do suffer a loss of stability, probably when i am trying to get to fast.

leads to a high, ugly slight push shot. Or a slice with the Driver

Working on Tempo is my primary focus currently. Hard to do on your own at the range, but have bought a 3bays Swing analyser just to help my work on rhythm

@tuggles, were you fitted for these as 89mph would see you in stiff all day long (Luke Donald is only 3mph faster).

if you have an itch it won't go away until you have lovely forged irons in S300 or KBS tour S or XP 105 S

I was fitted locally just before i bought the Clubs, SS was there or there abouts 87-89 back then. Fitter advised stiff shafts, but i really struggled with the way they felt (having played reg for all my time golfing)

I walked away from the fitting and never purchased the i20's i liked the best (best part of £600)

A week or so later a saw the TM's and after some various price matching and online cash back shenanigans. Bought Stiff KBS shafts and was happy. Until they arrived and were Regular flex.

They seemed very stiff in comparison to the Nippon NS Pro shafts i had in my Cobra S3's so just kept them anyway.

Started of well but i now feel the wobble more and more on a good strike.

Like i said earlier though, i probably swing at 90-95%%when i should be going for more like 70-75%.

89mph is probably artificially high and is half the reason i can be amazing one day, then poop the next.

I am trying to work on it though.

@Norfolkshaun and Sawtooth

Thats sound advice regarding putting style over substance. I will not be going down the full blade route for a good while yet (if ever) and will absolutely be looking at a combo set of CB / MB

Whilst i really do have an itch to scratch, i dont want to jump right in to the deep end

I hack around with vr pro blades. I love them and enjoyed them even when I was playing of 19. Don't need none of those namby pamby combo's.

I will say the middle of the 3 iron is about the size of the ball. So that gets left out for a hybrid.

EDIT: I also came from cobra bafflers which are SGI clubs. It was slightly rocky to start with. But that wasn't the clubs, my swing had changed for some reason!

well thanks to my new best forum friend i will be indulging in this experiment very shortly.

Ill report back with an honest appraisal of how i get on

Why not look around for somewhere you can try a few clubs in different shaft specs. I don't think the Rocketbladez tour would be that hard to hit for your ability as there's still plenty of forgiveness. Do the other clubs other than 8 iron and down, feel whippy? Maybe get a pro to have a look.£20-30 for a lesson is a much cheaper option and find out if they do balloon or if it's a perception. A launch monitor would tell you

Homer, I actually read that post as quickly as I possibly could, because I could tell that was how you typed it.. Calm down fella, no one is gonna catch up to you. You don't have to post 500 times today just to make up for the time you've missed.. Maybe sit back, have a coffee and enjoy the slower pace of life..

For anyone who has lived under a rock for the past 5 years, go to youtube - Search "The Inbetweeners - Jay's football friend" not linked direct due to potty mouthed youths.

Friend!!!

Football Friend

I watched the 2nd film the other day.. very funny, very gross

Hi Homer

I do have regular lessons (as mentioned) and i am working quite hard on trying to combat the height issues. Its not mega bad or anything, i just wish the ball flight was more penetrating. In calm conditions one of my good strikes (when they happen) will be as good as any single figure H/C'er. My bad strikes on the other hand, would not be saved by using even the biggest super game improvement iron.

That is not the be all and end all of me wanting this type of club. I want to test myself with them and who knows, maybe i will become a better ball striker because of it (i am already pretty decent to be honest, its my putting and wildness off the tee that has previously hurt my score)(and yes i am having lessons to fix both these issues)

To be honest i do want to indulge myself a bit also.

nothing ventured nothing gained.

I played with the TM Tour Preferred (08 version) when I got back into golf and was playing off 14 or so and I think you could do well with a "better" player club. If ball striking isn't an issue then why not. As you said, nothing ventured. Good luck with the search for something you enjoy

I think i swing to hard (poor tempo) so i do think that this is adding unwanted backspin for sure. ....

the addition of spin is entirely independent of tempo - it's a function of clubhead speed, apparent loft etc etc

I seem to be the only person reading the thread who considers your existing clubs to be in the 'players' category you describe; however you seem convinced that you should change them, as well as the shafts, and it is entirely your decision - there's no right or wrong about it.

btw the KBS Tour S isn't particularly S, and stiffening the shafts isn't necessarily going to result in a lower ball flight - people have a funny way of compensating in their swings and end up with similar results from many shafts with their irons. you might consider a change of ball for your trajectory wishes...but that's nowhere near as much fun as new clubs :)

First update

Went to the range on my lunch armed with a 5i,7i, and pw from both my current set and my new Amp Pro's (courtesy of Bluewolf) and proceeded to hit around 20 balls with my current 7i and PW. To be fair i was hitting them pretty well with a high draw on a good strike (plus some duffers for good measure)

Started to then hit alternate shots with both PW's to try and make a comparison.

First few were quite high and carrying around 125 - 130 yards for both clubs. Pretty similar flight shape and both (pleasingly consistently) landing around 10 yards left of my target. First impressions were good, the clubs are noticeably heavier than my current RBZ Tours and the feeling at impact was much more solid.

Moved on to the 7 iron and again alternated shots. I struggled for the first few with the AMP's and was hitting a nice high draw with my Tours. However after around 5 shots with the AMP's i was hitting them really crisp and if i am being honest they were out carrying my RBZ's by a good 5 yards (measuring with the Mk1 Eyeball). I would not say that the peak height of the AMP's was noticeably different to the RBZ's but it definitely "felt" much better if that makes sense?

All in all a promising start for the Cobras. They feel lovely, i am not intimidated by the smaller heads, shafts feel lovely also and they look sexy as heck....

Honestly the did not feel any less forgiving than my TM's. I hit just as many shockers with them than i did the AMP's (maybe slight more TBH)

Another range session tonight and i am sure ill get there again during the week for a real play.

Im playing twice over the weekend and have no issues with chucking them in the bag.

One swallow does not make a summer of course!

But did i mention just how good looking they are.........

(Danny......im trying to resist the looks and be totally objective........... im really trying........ :D)

Ha ha.. they are pleasing to the eye aren't they? :D

I remember when I first got them, I really didn't feel like there was any less forgiveness than with the JPX800 Pros I'd been using previously. I was also surprised at how long they were, especially in the long irons..

However, before you make any decision, make sure you play a few rounds with them. My own view on forgiveness is that when you're playing well you can play with anything, it's when you have that slight off day that you really notice. That slightly toed 9 iron that falls right into the front bunker can be a destructive shot mentally, especially when you know that the same shot with a GI iron would have ended up on the front of the green.. (anyway, why listen to me? I'm trialling a combo set of MP54 / MP4's next week..:D)
