After a little advice.

Currently of 19 but have been playing pretty well in the off season and I am very confident of getting down to 15 next year (shot a few 82 and 83s recently)

Currently I play rocketbladez tour irons with KBS Reg shafts.

I like these clubs, but do feel the "whippy" sensation when hitting 8 iron or lower.

I am prone (on bad days)to hit the ball very high, not ballooning but much higher than I would like.

I have a fairly decent swing speed of around 89 mph with a 7 iron and though I hit fairly decent distances, I feel that I am losing Length from height

Was thinking about selling my irons and going for a stiffer shaft. Not saying this will cure the height issues but will be more stable with my SS?

The daft thing is I have an itch to scratch

Been looking at some lovely Cobra S3 pro irons (combo set of MB and CB) and I really would like to indulge.

I'm not intimidated by hitting players type clubs and have always loved that soft buttery feel when hit correctly.

I know these will be less forgiving than what I currently have without question, but part of me wants to get used to swinging a club like this to help me become a better ball striker.

Worst case scenario I don't get on with them.

I can just go back to a larger cavity backed iron.

Surely just by using a club like this and continuing practicing regularly (like I currently do) will be beneficial in the long run?

Feel free to answer honestly.

Thanks

89 mph with a 7i is pretty decent, faster than a lot will swing thier driver. you need to get the right shaft flex.

Why don't you go test the same irons with a stiff shaft and see how you get on with them?

You could also try buying the odd single iron on Ebay with a stiffer shaft than what you have and that way you can test it as much as you like outside and on the course. Compare say your existing 6I with the new old one with the stiff shaft - side by side.

I think i swing to hard (poor tempo) so i do think that this is adding unwanted backspin for sure. Honestly if i learned to swing smoother i would be happier with a slightly slower speed

note to all

I am having lessons and practice quite religiously. I do not thing getting stiffer shafts and less cavity will cure this. Its not a golden bullet in my eyes. Also all my other clubs are stiffed shafted and i much much prefer them.

I play with MP-52's which are a muscle back which are not as forgiving as a large cavity backed club with a larger sweet spot, I did what your looking to do, go with what I felt I was going to get towards but do all the work with those clubs from the outset, I don't think the clubs have held me back, as some off here who come against me at times will confirm.

I say go for it, get the right shafts & flex to suit your swing speed and get the clubs you want

I had the same issue with hitting the ball high, had a session on the GC2 and that hilighted my launch angle was way to high with my irons. Essentially I was adding loft at impact.

Yeah have not ruled that out.

Plenty of single forged irons with S300 shafts knocking about on fleabay for pennies. Saying that i am an impulsive chappy. Part of me wants to throw myself into the deep end and try my best to make it work. I do love practicing and can personally see value in hitting the range with a players club. There are a few old Wilson and Taylor made MB irons knocking around at my local range and i get on quite well with them. Certainly hit them as well as my TM's (when swinging well)

But i really want to play a few rounds with a bag full of lovely MB irons and commit to have to use them, in order to improve my striking moving forward

get yourself some TP11s .,

forgiving clubs are overrated

Another thing i forgot to mention is that the RBZ's can (if caught right out the middle) fly ridiculous distances. All well and good and yes i feel like a proper macho man when it happens, but invariably im putting the ball right through the green

Would prefer the "truer" distance control that a forged (less juiced up) traditional club would offer. Sometimes i hit a big one that is much further than could reasonably be expected and i just think "where the blimmin heck has that come from"

Stunners those things

Realistically im thinking S3 pro, AMP pro, TM CB, Nike Combo or similar

Need to learn to walk before i start running with a butter knife Mizzie :D

Mate, I've got a set of Cobra Amp Cell Pro irons you're more than welcome to take for a few weeks to see if you like the feel. I'm going to be selling them soon anyway. DG S300 shafts, standard length, lies and lofts. If you like them then you can either buy them or buy a similar set elsewhere. Absolutely no pressure from me.

Because he'll probably fall in love with blades, like I did with the TP9s I bought cheap from the original American Golf shop in Warrington for exactly that purpose - improving my ball-striking!

@tuggles, were you fitted for these as 89mph would see you in stiff all day long (Luke Donald is only 3mph faster).

if you have an itch it won't go away until you have lovely forged irons in S300 or KBS tour S or XP 105 S

Careful not to put style over substance. I mean MB's or full blade irons can look gorgeous so I can see the attraction. A better player cavity iron like the AP2 might be a sensible stepping stone or go progressive as you mentioned.

I purchased my first set of AP2 when I was getting back into golf about 5 years ago. I was 13 hcap before my 5 year absence and I was playing to about 16 and struggling when I came back to golf. I chose AP2's and they have helped me get from 16 really to 8 in that time. That's roughly at the stage you are at now.

Worth being a little careful here, I play 825 pros and they are lovely, a little bit of forgiveness for when your ball striking is a little off the mark.

My regular pp's play MP59's, when they are playing well they are both lovely ball strikers with high swing speeds, both play off 18. The only issue is one has started going back to more hybrids due to the lack of forgiveness, he just says when he is not playing well the irons can make it feel much worse.

I think forged irons feel great but be careful going too far down the blade route.

Hope this makes scene.
