Following on from his 40 points in each of the last two rounds on the longest day challenge, I played this afternoon with HTL at his home club at Leatherhead. ALthough he didn't strike the ball as well as Friday he still had 36 points with a blobbed hole.

We were actually playing a matchplay game and the bugger did me again 1 up. I was dormie one down on the 205 yard par 3 18th and he missed the green left. I hit a rescue with everything in the locker and a bit more to try and get there (5 and 3 woods would have been too long) and found the middle of the green. He hit an average chip to about 10 feet and I rolled up to the holes edge for a 3 thinking I'd knicked a half and he only went and drained it. Good job the hole was there though as it was 5 feet past otherwise.

I have to say it was a great day and the course was playing tough. The fairways are pretty tight on every hole (tree lined) and were dry in places and running. The greens were very hard and only a well struck ball would get any kind of purchase otherwise it would land and run through. They were also putting pretty quick too.

It was a see-saw game. He went 3 up after 3 and I pulled it back to all square only to lose the 9th for HTL to hold a narrow lead. I won the 10th to go all square but he won 11 and 12 to go back to 2 up. I knicked 13 with a solid par putt and got it back level on 14. Hywel got a decisive 4 on 17 after I three putted to go dormie 1 up and then knicked the 18th in killer fashion.

It was a great day out and he definitely playing better than his 17 handicap. If you are challenged to a game by him soon (he works at a college so will be off for six weeks soon and playing all the time) bring your A game or failing that make sure there's money in your wallet!

As a footnote Team Double H (Home and HTL) are still unbeaten so if anyone fancies a game soon get in touch.

I honestly think he'll be off about 12 (maybe lower) once he gets to play every day during the summer. He needs a putting lesson (maybe a driving one too as he's lost confidence in his woods) and then he'll be rocking.

A good man to have on your side believe me!
