Hi. I seem to be having a few problems with my G10 irons.
I have been playing regular (2,3 or 4 times a week) and feel like although my overall game has improved, handicap from 22, now to 15 from may this year to today.
The irons were custom fit for myself when I played about once a month a few years ago, when the g10's were the new range.
I'm not sure about the measurements but they are all green dot. With this set I bought a g10 driver 12.5* regular flex which was suggested to me by the club pro(who did all my fitting at Gainsborough). Once I played more regular and got a better swing it was clear to see that I was losing distance but gaining height from the tee. I hunted for a new a driver and chose Taylormade superfast burner2.0 stiff shaft 10*. My driver has once again improved my driving 10 fold. So I purchased the matching rescue 18* and it's had the same effect from the fairway.
I can hit my driver sweet about 230-250 carry and my rescue about 190-210 carry. With these new Taylormade woods it has made me question my iron play and distance control. I know that when I'm on top of my game and hitting it sweet iused to hit my 7iron 150-160 yards. Now I'm lucky if I make it to 140. And each club throught to SW is like that. I also seem to getting a lot more fade when I hit my bad shot.
I think that my irons are more of a hindrance at the moment as they just feel heavy and lack distance. Would this be down to my swing being more consistent and hopefully better?!
I don't know if I need stiff shafts, graphite shafts, different brand? I will try a few out in the next few months but wanted a few pointers or help with my distance loss!!

I did own a set of Calloway big Bertha irons 04, graphite shafts and they were the sweetest and best irons I have ever played with. In my mind I keep wanting to revert back to graphite shafts but you don't really see a lot of people using them and I don't know why?

remember a custom fitting is only any good for a consistent swing.

maybe you swing has changed and all you need is the irons re-adjusting. would be a cheaper option than a replacement set

I had G10 irons and traded them for a smaller head iron as the G10 have large soles

My 7 iron in summer is approx 150yds as a guide

Do you take deep divots with the G10 ?

I do tend to take deep divots but that has only just happened in the last 6 months, which seems to coincide with my handicap coming down and my swing getting better or more consistent.

Wolfman, your 7 iron 150yards is the same a sme in the summer but like i said, im getting only about 140 max at the moment.

full_throttle, it has crossed my mind to get fitted again but the irons just seem heavy to me for some reason and i'm not sure if i should just start from a new custom fitted set again.

In my bag i also carry a G15 31dg rescue/hybrid club which i primarily use to get me out of the rough 1st or 2nd cut when the ball is slighlty buried. It also doubles up as my 6 iron. I can hit this club perfect 9 times out of 10. Straight with a slight draw when doing a full swing. That along with my taylormade 18dg rescue club are the only clubs that i can draw when doing a full swing. Both have stiff graphite shafts.

No.. all my irons are steel shafts apart from my rescue/hybrid clubs which are graphite shafted.
I find it far easier and lighter and more control when hitting my rescue/hybrid/wood clubs.

If no then the fade might be being caused by the offset of the G10 irons...

More offset will not increase fade, less offset will cause that. Excessive offset will more likely result in a pull / hook.

It sounds like you have improved your swing since getting custom fit for the G10's and you may need them adjusting in loft or lie, or you may need to move to more of a players club like the i20 if staying with Ping.

I've just been to book in to get my clubs re-fitted. Made the appointment for Friday afternoon. If any of you guys are interested i'll post the outcome on here!!
I'll certainly be interested to see what's what!!!

You might find the balance of the graphite shafts suit you better than steel shafts which helps with the draw.
Make sure you ask the pro about graphites. Where are you a member?

Hi. Just an update as requested. I went to the fitting centre and tried a few things out.
As I am using ping g10 and it was a ping fitting centre obviously the choice of clubs were all pings!
It turns out that the clubs are fitted correctly, green dot and lie and loft, etc.... Tried some different models to see if anything could be improved.
Tried a g20 7 iron against my own g10 7 iron. No noticeable difference.
Tried a g20 light steel shaft....again, no difference.
Tried an i20 regular steel shaft, felt nicer to hit but no distance improvement.
Tried a g20 graphite shaft, hit it an extra 25 yards, but my bad shot seem to be exaggerated!

I was using the trackman system which showed up all my results from each club. It seems that my own g10 was by far the most consistent. I was getting a carry of about 135 on average and a roll of about an extra 7 yards. The g20 was hitting about 138 on average and a roll of about 3-4 yards. The g20 graphite shafts was on average about 153 with a 3-4 yard roll. But highly inconsistent(1 good shot out of 5).

So, it was suggested to me that whilst my swing and game has improved in the time I've been fitted previous and to now, that my irons are perfectly fine for me.
The whole experience and fitting process was really really good and I would highly recommend it. The software used was brilliant, and the choice of clubs(all be it ping!).

What now.... A couple of lessons I think!!

Peace of mind more than anything knowing my clubs are exactly what I need.

lessons would be a good investment, if you have used a pro previously and benefited from his lessons then go back, if not ask around for advice then book a lesson and see how it goes, book the second lesson a month away to give you time to work on what you have been shown.
