Hi all,

I'm just starting out. I have various bits of research etc.. but loads of mixed replies

I have full set of Wilson pro-staff irons or a complete set of Benross PT-200 clubs with black carbon shafts.. which is better to start off with do you guys think..?

thnx

Hi Brett and welcome to the nuthouse.
It's pretty much down to you which feel better, which ones you hit better and which set you are most comfortable playing with.
If I were you I would take both sets to the range and see how you get on with each one. All I would say is straight is better than distance when you're starting out playing the game.
As you already have clubs then invest in some lessons as soon as you can and you can ask your pro which are better for you to start out with.
One last thing is we do this for fun (really we do!) so just enjoy it and with time and practice you will improve.

Cheers Andy..!

Many thanks for reply. I'm off to American golf store for a 30 min lesson and they said take one of both 7 irons and go from there. Im trying to find the benross ones i have but cant see them anywhere lol

don't know that particular benross but they are or at least were targeted at your sort of player

wilson make a full range so pro staff might not identify the actual model

i would suggest you take a 5 iron from each set too as that is harder to hit and likely to show the difference clearer

american golf have a reputation for suggesting you buy a new set from them of course and will provide a new 7 iron that shows the benefit ignore them for the time being as that 7 iron is a 6 or stronger in all but name

Thanks for the advice.

Yeah I'm under no doubt they are going to try a sales tactic.! Lol
The Wilson clubs are the OD plus offset ones.
It may even look into some kind of new starter package etc

welcome along enjoy the ride ;)

get a lesson booked for the pro to get the basics ingrained correctly to start even if it is only 1 or 2 it will be worth it in the long run and while youll there he'll give you an opinon on the clubs FOC and dependant on how you hit them.

Hi Brettdyer80:

I do not know either models but having purchased some generic clubs to start off with, I found buying used good equipment has worked out very well for me. With the help of my teaching pro, I was able to get kitted out with a set of Tommy Armour 845 irons (clubs of legendary status here in the USA) a couple of Cleveland wedges, a couple of TaylorMade Woods and a Ping putter for around $300. The quality of equipment is far in advance of what I had. It is just better made, better built and will last a long time. I put fresh grips on them and bingo!

I do know in the USA Wilson ProStaff is considered to be their department store clubs - nothing wrong with that but not sure if that is what you have now and are looking for something built to last. BenRoss I have no clue, about.

Just food for thought. A local pro if you have been having lessons with them may really be helpful at getting you some used quality gear.

i'd recommend a starter lesson package with your local pro. Quite a few have launch monitors nowadays and should be able to see which clubs suit you best based on what they see in the lessons and what they see from the numbers.

Welcome to the madhouse. Get a few lessons ASAP before you develop any bad habits . Don't wait 40 years like me, lol.
As for which clubs to use , the ones you feel most comfortable with. After a few lessons you'll have a better idea what suits you best.:fore:
