Heathrow expansion

If Heathrow wasn't there where would those who are involved with it work? Likewise if BI was built, you would need staff to work it. Considering the parlous emplyment state in Kent, I'm sure those moaning would be out shouted by those taking work and thew money it brings in for everyone in the area.

On completion of BI those wishing to continue working in an airport environment will upsticks and rock up at the new facility... And, if you think the construction itself will bring work to 'locals' it won't...

Schiphol has 4 runways, one of which is on reclaimed land from the North Sea. You hit the nail on the head. Heathrow is a competiting to be a major Hub Airport. It is doing so with one leg strapped behind its back.
Sensible option was to build a Hub airport near Cliffe, Kent back in 60's / 70's thwarted only by the Fuel crisis of that period. In hindsight it could now have fed into Eurostar direct to Paris, Brussels & beyond into Europe. Loads of land there, but too many nesting & migrating birds apparently...you couldn't make it up!
Radbourne - That is not far off from what we can do here in the NE. I fly from Newcastle and can choose Heathrow, CDG, Schipol, Dusseldorf or Dubai as my hub. That is part of the battle for BA and the govt, keeping Heathrow as a key option. (personal preference is Schipol so that is what I use unless the price is out of sight)

I once changed in Shipshool, and after landing we were taxying for ages. I think we even crossed a motorway or a canal. Could have taken the train.

It's also very big, an while it offers a lot, changing flights can be tight. Especially flying from Shengen to not or the other way around. But for a long stop over I like it. Better than Frankfurt.

Actually Schiphol has 6 ,SIX, Runways

If they did the Heathrow Hub idea, extending the North runway westwards, over the M25, they could also afford to build a second runway at Gatwick
Capacity problem solved for the next 100 years and by then we would have run out of oil anyway, so unless someone invents Dilithium Crystals, whats the point?

I find that when in Shipshool for a stop over it's easy to forget you are not in a UK airport.
