Heathrow expansion

Heard a old guy being interviewed at lunchtime who lived in the Wye Valley in the welsh borders some 120 miles from Heathrow. He said it was on the flightpath to the USA and he cannot go outside without hearing the "constant roar" of planes and it just wasn't right that lives are "being ruined" by this noise pollution and constant expansion! Is he for real or am I missing something???

What a prat, ha ha. I grew up under the flight path of Manchester airport, not claiming to be in the same league as being next door to Heathrow, and you zone out the planes. When my wife first visited my mum's, she still lives there, she struggled with it but even she doesn't notice them now. 120 miles away, he's having a laugh.

I could understand it 20 years ago with Concord's Sonic Boom, but the aircraft now fly higher quicker and are way less noisy than they used to be

One of the professionally offended methinks

It would be like me complaining about the noise of the railway that runs next to my house. I knew it was there when I moved in and I didn't start bleating about it from then on. I also live around six miles from Heathrow so know about the noise of planes too. But I deal with it. Unlike that excellent;y phrased "professionally offended" mob

Then you'll be fully aware not all the 'concerns' re further Heathrow expansion are to do with the noise... In fact, I suspect. for most nearer the airport its not even near the top of their concerns...

If this was China they would have had 6 new runways up by now. And fast trains everywhere. ;)

Correct. And this is why we fall further ans further behind. If is needed, build it. Being on the flight path means you can marvel at how the damn things stay in the air whilst going so slow. It's a trick, go back, go back!!!

If it was just about runway capacity this could have been resolved many times over at plenty of other locations more quickly and possibly cheaper... But its not, its mainly about investors getting a return...

And, before someone else comes along and posts it... Probably mine [and yours] pension fund....

Genuine question. If it is not the noise what are the main concerns? I don't know the area at all.

Congestion, air pollution, climate change I'd hazard a guess at.

For the locals they'll be leaving reason three to the treehuggers that have adopted the cause...

With regard air pollution, when visiting family close to Heathrow, if you spent anytime outside, on arrival home, you feel in need of a shower and change of clothes as the smell of fuel seems to hang on in there...

Also, some plans may require the relocation of nearby graveyards which is causing some concern...

I heard the guy who did the paper looking at the options, Howard Davies?, and his comment on the pollution was that Heathrow is very close to major roads and a motorway and that distorts the Heathrow figures. His belief was that London as a whole has pollution problems and Heathrow on its own was not a major cause. I can't say I believe that, lots of planes burning lots of fuel, but that was his view. Could he be correct?

A lot of the pollution from the aircraft is from when they are taxing or in the holding zone waiting for their slot

With a third runway they shouldn't be in the holding zone as long so wouldn't produce as much pollution as long as they open up more slots

Also a lot of the pollution does indeed come from the traffic from the M25 but a good deal is also from the traffic going into the terminals

There should be data from when the ash cloud was stopping air travel in Europe. How much cleaner was the air in London back then?
Once we know that do a car free couple of days but with full flight service. Compare.

Good luck with that....

Folk in London giving up on using their cars.... Never happen...

chances Zac Goldsmith winning the Richmond Seat as an independent? Interesting that he wants to make the election a referendum on Heathrow - except his prime opponent will be the LibDems - who also opposed Heathrow. So the differentiator betyween ZacG and the LDs will be Brexit - with ZG Leave and LDs Remain. Richmond 70% Remain

In the summer months there are occasions when car uage in Paris and Rome is restricted due to air quality. Rome in particular is in a bowl and so suffers badly. I can't remember the method but it is on the lines of you are either A or B. A gets a go one day, B the next. This may come to London one day. Both Rome and Paris are car mad so if they can do it.......

I think they also have restrictions on lorry usage in the city. Mainly for safety but it would also spread the concentration of fumes across the 24hrs rather than cluster the fumes in a shorter period. All these things will have to be looked at.
