So a third runway has been approved for Heathrow. What I don't understand is why are we only adding 1 extra runway? Surely by the time it's built it will be at full capacity, so why don't we also build a second at Gatwick and possibly Manchester?

They have been on about the 3rd runway at Heathrow for as long as i can remember....

Good question. No doubt we will have a public enquiry which lasts 5years, costs £50m and still passes the application. It then gets built, more years, and is already full to capacity.

Also, why does the govt make the decision? The govt doesn't own the airports, BAA does, or are they a govt owned body? Could Gatwick not apply to build an extra runway at the same time?

Transport expert required to answer some fairly simple, and to me logical, questions.

Its taken a ridiculous amount of time already. As for a 2nd runway at Manchester... its already got a 2nd runway

Add a third then.....
I am talking about expanding most of the mian airport capacities in this country and not just one.
We always do things in catch up here in the UK, so why not be proactive and get ahead for once.
Interesting comment on the radio today, from a Dutchman, who said the worst thing for Amsterdam Schipol airport would be a Heathrow expansion due to the amount of traffic we already have going there instead of Heathrow. Surely someone has to grasp the nettle and see the possibilities of looking ahead?

Everyone protesting about a runway being built still wants more air travel opportunities .... just not near them. Heathrow has been a major airport for over 40 years. Anyone who lives near or under the flight path knew what they were getting in to so sorry, no sympathy there at all.

And if any MPs want to resign, fine. See you later. Plenty more where you came from.

Build one at Heathrow and one at Gatwick.

.

Fair point, but suspect you might feel different if you lived in Harmondsworth and faced your house being flattened.

Wrong....

I know quite a few who well remember the first 'terminal' being a collection of tents....

If it truly meant more 'proper' jobs for the area I'd be all for it...
But, it won't. so they can shove the plans as far up where the sun don't shine as far as I am concerned...

And how long has Harmondsworth been near Heathrow Airport? Did it just move there overnight? Sorry but when you have NIMBYs being interviewed on TV who have lived there "20 years" then I have no sympathy for them at all. And it's not like they are going to lose out financially.

Just saw a few families on the news, quoting Dodgy Dave's "No, No, No" pledge in 2010, who trusted him and moved to Harmondsworth. The compensation offer is market value + 25%......doesn't seem that generous after deducting moving costs etc (and factoring in the probable fall in value since this debate resurfaced).

Boris Johnson once said that he would lie down in front of the bulldozers if Heathrow was chosen for London's new runway. I can't wait to see him get run over! 😀

I have driven past heathrow 4 times in the last couple of months and do t know how i did t get a parking ticket. The M25 is a nightmare round there so lord knows what it will be like When no3 is built.

I personally preferred the idea of extending the north runway http://www.heathrowhub.com/

which basically meant building another runway westwards with a 650 yard "buffer" between the runways
Looked viable, cheaper and less damaging to the existing villages.

Agree thats the option to me that looked the most viable and it would have also allowed Gatwick to extend as well - best of both worlds.

Gatwick have the funds and can start right now and be done in 5 years including improving the access

Maybe I'm being suspicious but there seems to me to be more to this

Anyone know why they don't build at both Heathrow and Gatwick?

25% above cost is way more than if a new road or rail line was built. The offer is generous. Unfortunately these things happen with big projects. There will always be losers but the national interest is greater unfortunately for the people involved.

The decision may have been made, many years and many millions of pounds (surely better spent elsewhere) down the line but it'll be as many years and as many millions of pounds before a single shovel of soil is removed and the builders move in. This will simply rumble through the legal process, probably here and in Europe. I agree with Frag that there was a better (no option being ideal) option on the table. I can still see Gatwick mounting an appeal as well. Is that really a better option though and wouldn't that simply get dragged through the courts while demand grows and capacity reaches breaking point at both main airports
