Has golf gone to far with technology?

I was thinking the other day that golf must be the one sport (apart from motor racing) where there have been so many technological advancements.

If you look at other sports most equipment has remained similar for years.

Cricket has a bat made out of the same material (any attempts to change it have been deemed illegal).

The tennis racket appears to have remained unchanged for years

The pool and snooker cue are the same.

Darts are the same.

So has golf been allowed to advance too far?

Tennis rackets have changed a lot in the past few decades, just like golf clubs.
Not too bothered with the technology of golf clubs, but they have to be true to their word. If the rbz driver isn't actually longer, I'm sure that I won't be the only golfer disappointed .

I agree the components may have changed but not every year ..... and the sweet spot is still in the same place (no MOI) and there is no adusjtability (not sure if thats a word lol).

For the record I was more thinking about the Cobra irons with the imrpoved sweet spot ( I think its cobra anyway)

I know I for one have enjoyed the benefits of technological advances, I believe it has lowered my scores (considerably against the blades we would have) and as such I can get round in a few less and enjoy it all the more.

The problem with this sort of question is there have been advances in technology since the game begun, should we all be using hickory clubs? persimmon drivers? and what point can someone say "right that'll do us" and then carry on with the same kit from there on in?

I know this has bee touched on in the past and some people have said that courses need to become longer because they are no longer a challenge for the pros or as people now hit further they have to move fairway bunkers as they are no longer in play.

In other sports the size of the pitch hasnt changed .... in fact in cricket they make the pitch smaller for 20twenty games to add to the excitement

There has been talk of making golf balls that do not carry as far for competitions. The limits have been reached on most golf courses and they cannot be made any longer. I did read once that there was consideration of making a spec for golf balls that stipulated they should float in water, This would lighten them and make it more difficult to hit the Forum Average of 340 Yards.

Despite titanium headed 460cc drivers, cavity backed perimeter weighted irons, belly putters & multi-layer balls the average handicap of club golfers has hardly changed in 40 years.
Oh! nd it now takes 4 hours 30 mins on a good day. They call it progress; I call it being conned by the golf industry.

If pro's are flying the bunkers, using modern technology, add extra bunkers at the new driving distance. That way accuracy is still rewarded just as it was x years ago when the current bunkers were at driving distance. The holes may play shorter but at least spectators will see birdies(exciting) rather than bogies(boring).
