Harrington Disqualified..?

Having read this thread, there are a lot of people saying the rules need to be changed and its harsh on not just PH but camilo as well.

At the end of the day they have broke the rules, end of. if they had called the referee in at the time penaltys or no penaltys would of been incurred and that would have been no problem. As it is they never and they have been dealt with accordingly.

Rules are rules.

with this latest incident the pga tour.com have even opened up a Debate:Do the rules need changing?

http://tourreport.pgatour.com/2011/01/21/debate-do-the-rules-need-changing/

if Theyre Questioning it, to even Open a debate surely says that things arent right

lets hope some good comes out of these daft recent occurrences & rulings and the R & A and USGA sort them for the better of the game

no, it's a soft one for them as the rule book will be replaced next year anyway (have a look, current rule book is 2008 - 2011). lets everyone have a moan.
a few rules will be tweaked but in situations like this unless they amend the rules to permit referees discretion (how when not every game has a referee and we're all supposed to play to the same rules.
my gripe with the rules is that they are so badly written. well intentioned but trying to do too much in as few rules as possible. they need to apply the KISS principle.
the evidence for this is that the decisions book is five times bigger than the rule book.

Must agree. If a pro is in any doubt he can call a referee.

If someone on here had seen what happened to Harrington, and no one else had, what would you have done. ? Ignored it, brought it up on here, reported it in some way ?

I think the easiest way to resolve this is not with a change to the current rules but by giving a window for rules breaches to be raised.

So cards are signed and in at 6:10pm. You have until 7:10pm to raise and review any infractions.

I mean, the way things are at the moment could I email R&A about the Open this year after watching the highlights on DVD? If I did, should it change the outcome of the event? How long should be accepted.

The other consideration is who? Players certainly, referees also. The crowd actually present at the event who may see something the other players of referees do not. But people at home watching TV? I don't think that can be wise at all.

For incidents in which the player gains no advantage (Harrington, Villegas) I'd agree with you.

But what if it's a player deliberately breaking the rules to gain an advantage?
In that case I'd be happy for anyone to bring it to the officials attention.

That's a fair enough suggestion but who decides if an advantage was gained? And how? Are the R&A going to have to define what counts as an advantage? 3 dimples? 5?
