Hardest course you have played?

OK, try Ganton, tough but fantastic. Carnoustie is an obvious one, right on your doorstep. Further afield I would recommend Carne in Ireland, absolutely brutal if the wind is blowing. I've also played Valderrama off the back tees, now that is a challenge!

Enjoy!!

It's a toss-up between Woburn Dukes in pouring rain, The Oxfordshire or Sunningdale New......
All tested me to the limits - and won......Handsomely.

Oh I almost forgot, St Enodoc in the wind is also as tough as they come. I once led their 36 hole open after the morning round with a nett 71 which is 2 over par out of a field of 90

If you come this far any of the links courses on the north west coast are pretty harsh with the wind :(

Played most of them in that area chris, Carne was definitely the toughest! Enniscrone is my favourite though, what a golf course that is!

Enniscrone is another slightly silly Ruddy design IMO with raised greens etc. Was a member there for three years and honestly would rate my current place as a better all round test, more so with Paul McGinley doing some redesign on it.

Thank you lads, some real belters mentioned! Carnoustie makes sense due its proximity,I quite fancy a few tracks in Ireland and down south too! Also fancy Dornoch,is that a toughie?

chris, what changes are they making at your place? I thought the first 3 or 4 holes were weak when I played it and also the 18th. Once you drop down to the lower level it is much better. Sorry but Co Donegal isn't a patch on Enniscrone :p

Royal county down has chewed me up, and spat me out, all three times I have played it. If I ever need a reality check as to how poorly I play this game, I'll be back. Probably in September.

Open in September at Royal Aberdeen is one I would recommend, the best £40 you will ever spend, you'll come off feeling like you have been rogered up the jinker but it'll be a £40 you will not regret spending nevertheless.

Changing bunkering and seemingly some changes to greens are in the pipelines. The second hole is probably one of the best holes I have ever played real risk and reward. Agreed about Co Donegal but as I play at Portsalon I would ;) ;)

Haha good one....thought you were a Co Donegal man. In that case, consider my statement retracted as I've not played Portsalon

Wow £40 is a great deal Dodger,my family are from Peterhead so I know the area well.I could play Fraserburgh too,hmmm...

Not played any of the major courses in the UK.
Personally for me its the PGA national at the Belfry. All 5 times I've played it been blowing a gale and that combined with the thick rough it was a mare. Greens where the quickest I've ever played too.

I'd agree with this from the courses I've played and for the same reasons:
Very thick rough and narrow fariways, a bit off line and your lucky to find your ball, penal bunkers that are very well placed and lightning quick greens.
On top of that it's not one of my favourite courses, the middle section is very up and down with little to inspire me.

Fulford with a crosswind. The first time I played it I wondered what all the fuss was about. The second time, with the crosswind, it was like a links course but with trees... what a beast.

But I still think the last 4 holes at Carnoustie is still the hardest 4 holes I've played, and that was on a still day.
