Hardest course you have played?

played royal dornoch 3 times end of april once off yellows twice off whites, hardest course ive played by far and most enjoyable ,
managable off yellows, totally differnt course off whites, get to the green and then its like the game starts again,
played half descent and shot 95 the 97 off 11 and that was on a still calm day

Royal St Georges, and I played it in flat calm.

Just so difficult to pick the right route to the green and judge where to land the ball when pitching and chipping. I shot 95 and wasn't too unhappy (I was off 16 back then).

Second would be St Andrews New for similar reasons.

With very little links experience they were a real eye opener compared to my usual gentle parkland golf.

In no particular order, and in the main because they're long:
Old Corkscrew, Naples, Florida - lovely course, but loads of bunkers and water on a good few holes with big carries.
St Mellion (Nicklaus course), Cornwall - beast. long, and tight in most places.
Blue Canyon course, Phuket - played a week before the Jonny Walker classic, so greens were rapid, and there's some silly carries over water and one over a canyon!

I'd recommend all three and would play them again in a heartbeat.

Royal Dornoch can be tough on any day i find esp off the back tee's. one of those places where you can hit the ball well and still rack up a 96;)

I've not been playing that long so i've only really ever played in scotland.

I found the Jubilee at St Andrews the toughest of those course by far. day i played was very windy and though.

look forward to going back.

A few years back the SGU rated the toughest courses in Scotland and Nairn Dunbar came out top.
I know a couple of top players who have played it and they said it was a beast.

The Troon muni Darley came out fourth. Now off the back that really takes some playing. Very easy to get on to play as the locals give it a wide berth, they call it a four ball [lost] course.

really I'm suprised by that, i always find Nairn Dunbar a fair test, not that diff imo.

Played it last week and it was in ex condition with the fairways running nice greens good. punished a wayward shot but any course shound do that.

Machrihanish Dunes off the whites. Drove it well all day and still shot an 82.
Carnoustie off the championship tees was nasty as was Hillside in the wind.

PS: Any round with Homer's mate who has no etiquette at all was pretty tough as well ;-)

I would have to agree with the comments about Royal Dornoch. First ever round in Scotland, awesome course, tough conditions but I loved every minute and couldn't believe how casual the whole place was.

Thanks again for all your posts guys,so far Carnoustie and Royal Dornoch are the favourites up north, not yet sure further away, and yes JustOne,I will happily travel outside the UK!

The Ailsa at Turnberry in what I can only describe as hurricane. Pumped a driver and a 3w at the fairly short 1st and still had a 20 yard bump & run. Shot 93 and beat the two American 6 h/cappers i was paired with by a long way. They must have reloaded 6/7 times each.

Well played mate,that sounds rough!

Carnoustie Championship in a reasonable breeze (15-20mph) was the toughest (though still very 'enjoyable'). Was pleased to shoot 99!

Toughest conditions (Golf would have been abandoned, but 'free' and had to experience real wind!) were St Andrews New in a 35, gusting to 50 straight off the North Sea. Played Matchplay because of the conditions. Par 3 14th (I think) was a Driver short of green compared to PW or 9 iron previous days! Smashed Driver to 3ft aiming at Eden estuary on 9! :whoo:

I played Carnoustie last year in windy conditions but the wind was arse about face, playing straight downwind on 15, 16 and 18.

16th was a little punched 6 iron, 17th was driver, 3 wood, 5 iron and 18th was 3 wood (just short of the burn!!) then LW.

Borth and Ynyslas golf links in West Wales. Tight fairways, deep rough, windy, fast greens, lots of out of bounds, generally just a tough course! Can't count how many balls i lost!

I've never struggled around here, apart from losing my swing for the last 3 holes of a 36 holer here years ago.

Maybe there's something in this short and straight business.... :)

La Moye in Jersey in a gale. One of the heighest spots on the Island with no protection.

I found this tough too. Didn't help that my rather frustrating round was further embarrassed by my tee shot on the 17th landing 2 foot from the pin of the 18th green... :(
