Hi guys,I am enjoying the US Open and I am amazed at how tough the Olympic is,what a beast! What is the hardest course you have played and why? Tell me your stories!

Borth and Ynyslas golf links in West Wales. Tight fairways, deep rough, windy, fast greens, lots of out of bounds, generally just a tough course! Can't count how many balls i lost!

The montgomery course at Carton House because staying out of the bunkers was a challenge and once I was in them I didn't have the skills to get out again.

Royal Troon back 9 is a brute into the wind, its a car wreck waiting to happen.

I was thinking the course they are playing on looks EASIER than most I've played as the ones we're used to are so poorly kept... all that whinging about the ball sitting down in the rough - we're lucky just to find them normally..... and they don't exactly have bobbly greens or rutted tee boxes either

(or seen bracken, millions of leaves or prickle bushes either!)

Tilgate in Crawley is a tough course as it's narrow/tree lined and rarely in good condition.

For decent courses that are tough then East Sussex National (East and West courses) as they are loooong and have penal rough (like links fescu).

Not played any of the major courses in the UK.
Personally for me its the PGA national at the Belfry. All 5 times I've played it been blowing a gale and that combined with the thick rough it was a mare. Greens where the quickest I've ever played too.

I'd say Royal Lytham closely followed by Southerness.

Lytham was super tough, I think I shot 93 and there was 9 pars and a birdie in that. If you missed a fairway you was knackered simple as that, the rough was a nightmare, it wasn't like getting out of the usual wispy type links heather, it was like barbed wire.

Southerness was just long and tight.
I was scared of taking the driver out, it was similar to holes being carved through a see of gorse, very pretty when in bloom. But a very tough golf course.
I enjoyed it though and would certainly go back.

I felt a little underwhelmed by Royal Lytham though after expecting so much.

Waldorf Astoria in Orlando - absolutely gorgeous but brutal - seriously raised greens with card wrecking bunkers, no options long, cracking water hazards, long with stiff rough. Although there are loads of tees if you are daft like me you'll go off around 6,800 yards and suffer. If you don't bring your A game get ready for a cricket score - which I had ! It is superb (in an S&M kind of way) - my young fella beat me by 10.

Played enniscrone an hour after the Irish close was finished on the same set up and from the back tees. Blimey that was a slog the elite amatuers really are awesome!

Conrawood. Intimidating course and feels like it plays very long due to the layout. SSS varies from 71 - 75 depending on the tees. A lot of water comes into play on it as well. Overall a tough track.

Played Galgorm Castle as well when it was set for for a europro tour event. It was nasty. We played of whites and a lot of thee were actually placed in back beside the blues. Second cut was thick and very very punishing. Lose one ball in it and you came out with 3 that weren't yours.

Some great posts so far, keep em coming.I fancy a real test soon so I will be picking a course from this thread to see if I can get round it with a half decent score!

Royal Aberdeen the week after the Walker Cup,greens to die for but tough rough and the back nine playing into a 20mph wind that was described to me as a light zephyr......wouldn't fancy it on a tough day!

BRUTAL.

Sorry didn't realise you wanted local torture - I'm sure you've got great local knowledge but further afield Royal St David's (harlech) claims to be the worlds hardest par 69 and it definitely sorted me out and Woodall Spa has 5 million bunkers some of which you can be aggressive and use your 52 degree wedge in. Both are great tracks.

Are you planning to stay local or willing to travel? I can certainly recommend a few tough old barstewards!

I am looking for tough tracks from all around the UK chaps, even further afield.I have a couple of golf breaks getting planned at the moment and I enjoy the stories regardless! Bring em on!

Littelestone (near Hastings).

I actually finished 3rd on 35 stableford points in an open last year, with at least 1/3 of the entrants being members.

The front 9 is ok, but about 7 of the back 9 seem to either be into winds or cross winds. The last 3 are brutal also. It is an open qualifier also, when at Royal St.georges or royal cinque ports.
