Happy St George’s Day ???????

I don't feel particularly passionate about it, but I'm English born and bred and it's our national day,

Compared to other countries I find us incredibly backwards in having any sense of national (English) identity so fair play to anyone who likes to celebrate.

I believe the big turning point from waving the Union Flag ?? to the English flag ???????came about during Euro 96.

Correct, that is when the penny dropped.
Even as long ago as the 1960's we schoolboys we used to have a good laugh at the England rugby supporters waving union flegs at Murrayfield

Just got to work on your National Anthem now.;)

Does anyone genuinley get excited by this day or St George? If so why does it do it for you?

I'm not being criticial, I just don't get it myself.

I wouldn't say I get excited but I have some great memories of St George's Day dinners at the golf club. Like here in Spain, its an excuse for a party. Sometimes all you need is something for people to focus on to them get them out having a laugh. I guess in that respect its no different to Paddy's Day. There'll be some that see it as a religious festival but the vast majority just want a laugh... hell, we need at present so why not.

Well...wouldn't say I get excited but it is an annual reminder of the day two mates and I found two unexploded bombs in the Scottish highlands sometime in the mid/late 1970's/

Not bothered to read the posts coz their will be the inevitable ones about St George isn't really English and other such moans. No one moans when it's Paddys day do they. Oh no.

Two big flags flying in our front windows !!!!!! I'm proud to say I'm English once more !!!!!!

But then people could argue celebrating your patriotism of being proud to be English yet are doing so on a day that represents a man that was born in Turkey, roman by Nationality and never set on Englands green and pleasant land is somewhat odd. Especially as you compare it to St Patrick who was in fact actually Irish is again an odd comparison ??‍♂️

I'm not knocking you and if you're proud to be English then fair play.

St Patrick wasn’t Irish.

No you're of course right i stand corrected was born in Brittania and Buried in Northern Ireland, but at least he visited and spent time in Ireland. Compare that to St George and he's at least got more of a claim.
Yea but George was busy fighting dragons. Snakes are a walk in the park in comparison.

:eek::eek:o_Oo_O

My, how your parents must have laughed when the story was explained . Does it make you shiver still?

Well...maybe I should but...it was just...one of those things....I dont think any of us had any real concept of the possible danger at the time. I do remember that we all got taken out of school one afternoon a couple days later...one of the lads had mentioned it to his dad who told someone who was in the army....and we all got taken out for the afternoon in the back of an army truck to show them where we had left the bombs (after posing with them for photographs!!).

Turns out they were unexploded mortars...we got a serious talking to about the potential danger of "playing" with such things and that was that.

Never found another bomb since in my life.
