Hanging on to clubs

I'm wondering how many people hang onto clubs on the off-chance they may get on with them some day? How long is too long to hold onto them.

I have held onto my MD Connemara putter throughout many attempts at getting a better putter, but it's back in the bag and I'm so happy it is. Other clubs may not have lasted this long and through so many changes.

Also, I don't get on with drivers but I've had my nike dymo2 all season and have hung onto it on the off chance the Kev/driver relationship ever changed

Funny thing is i have just purchased a new Rossie putter, had one and sold it !

Normally i sell after buying the new replacement, sady with putters i find you drift back to an old favourite so keeping them is probably the btter plan if you can afford it !

I get rid of unwanted clubs almost straightaway. My reasoning is if I've kept something 'just in case' I'll not fully commit to the new purchase. Its backfired a couple of times but, truthfully, I wouldn't do it any other way. I'd hazard a guess its made me make the most out of any new purchase because there's been no otrher choice other than to get out there and work the new club into my game.

I do have a few putters in the cupboard I bring out from time to time, but have stuck with my Odyssey white ice 7# for a couple of months now. Also have tried a number of different makes of 3 wood, but have just put back in the bag a Callaway X 15* with a regular steel shaft I've had for about 5 yrs, but hit more consistently than anything else.!?!?

Tend to hold onto putters as they all seem to a spell on the naughty step in increasing cycles!

my Ping Redwood D66 is staying forever, it looks to nice to ever sell even though it has been superceded several times. I would probably only get £50 or so for it and to me I would rather keep it.

Everything else will no doubt chop and change as is my nature

I have kept one club from way back in the mists of time. A Titliest persimmon driver... I just love the look of it. I hit it now and again, and out of the centre its a beast but catch it off centre and it goes nowhere.

More due to them being no good to anyone instead of keeping them for sentimental reasons

I normally keep mine till i need money to buy some thing one time i had 2 spare sets of irons just waiting to be sold cos if i sell them as soon as i dont need them i will end up blowing the money on some rubbish that i really dont need lol

I've got two main sets of irons: one is Maltby MMB's with Aerotech Steelfiber shafts, the other is a completely second hand set I built - Epon Technicity Heads with PX 5.5 Flighted shafts. If I keep these ones, I'm getting them re-chromed to look like new. Shafts were virtually new anyway.

Driver is a mix between a Wishon 919 with Wishon White shaft and a Versus head with an SK Fiber Pure Energy shaft.

Fairway and Hybrids are Wishon with Wishon shafts.

Wedges vary between Hakusa, Wishon and Maltby.

Putter varies between a Maltby mallet and a SeeMore mallet.

I normally sell gear on when its not wanted but there has been a few exceptions.A Ping Anser 2 putter that I just cant let go of,when i'm standing over a put with it I remember the great putts I made and it inspires confidence.The other is a Hippo Oil Can 56 wedge,ive had some ridiculously fortunate chip ins with it and it really saved me in some matches,these two will stay.
Apparently Monty had an old Callaway 5 wood that he used for years that he said he would never part with,not sure if he still uses it to this day thou.

A very diverse set up you have there. It'd be a good problem to have though!

i tend to keep old clubs no idea why though. currently gathering dust are;

Mizuno MP600 9.5 driver with Graf prolaunch red shaft stiff
Mizuno F50 3 wood with Adila nv R64 shaft
MP 630 20 deg hybrid Fubuki stiff
Black ox 56 and 60 deg wedges
MPT 50 and 58 deg wedges
MP FLiHi 2 iron
Cobra putter.

I do have a set of MP32 i switch to for winter use that just sit in my locker at the club.

When i swapped from my G10 irons to my s56's I kept the G10's for about 9 months 'just in case'. Was hitting my s56's great so got rid of the G10's. Pretty much the week after my swing went to pot and wished I had my G10's to fall back on as they were dead easy to hit compared to my s56's.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The golf gods hate me.
