Handicaps and happiness.

My best buddy is playing as much golf as he wants nowadays, on quite possibly the best course anywhere, where the beer is free too, but he was taken from us aged 45.

That puts everything in perspective for me, and I make sure I enjoy every chance I get to play.
Nicely put macster...well said

I am similar Fundy, I joined my club after a 6 year lay off and went in straight to 6, over 3 years I went up and touched 10 for a week and am now back down to 8, I wont be happy til its back to 6, anything after that will be an honest bonus but I also know how competitive I am and will still quietly hanker after lower.

ive gone back in at 10 after approx 6 yrs off too which is overly generous, got 0.4 off last week but feel like I missed the boat. Had a lesson last night and my ball striking isnt far off where it was when I was low cat 1, short game still light years away but slowly making some strides forward, just frustrating that nowhere affordable local to me has decent short game practise facilities. like you are competitve, will be playing every comp possible for the summer lol

I often read on here that someone describes themselves as hacking around off 10 or whatever.

Hey you talking about me ?  ;)

Not worried about my handicap, just enjoy playing reasonable golf. Unfortunately golf this year has been awful, but no toys out of the pram yet. ;)

Some folk do take it way too seriously or lose perspective with golf, perhaps because it's a solo sport it lends itself to analysis and target setting?

I had 15 years of taking footy seriously so now i just play golf to enjoy it. For me i'm the opposite of some, i would only stop playing if i lost the enjoyment of it not because i couldnt get any better/lower my handicap any further.

Long way to go till i hit my target H/C.

Rest assured though I will be enjoying it alot more then!

I will never be happy with the golf I play but always be pretty happy to be out there Hopefully.

Following my little match with Mr C over the past 18 months I'm now just glad to be on the course but I still care about how well I play and I do still want to score the best I can, it's just that I know that in the wider scheme of things it doesn't actually matter that much what number goes on the card (Mrs MN says she's not convinced about that last bit. I am a golfer, after all :D).

I think I'd keep playing whatever standard I was. I simply love golf. My dad was a golf nut. He introduced me to the game and we spent many happy days on the course together especially in my younger days. I think it means too much to me to ever give it up.

This pretty well sums it up for me, and well put MashieNiblick.

It's not until you have a life encounter such as this and as Macster has experienced, you realise that life is too short and it really doesn't matter how good or bad the golf is, its just being out there and ENJOYING every minute.

Golfmmad.

I'd love to get back down to Single figures, but I'm realistic, and realise that at 48, I'm hardly likely to threaten Cat1, but it would be nice to perhaps have a couple of seasons off 8/9.

Hang on in there I'm 51 and off 7 ( 6.0 ) next week and there are 2 guys in their 60's at my club off 5 and 6 , neither of them that long off the tee but short game to die for :D

I take your point, but they must either practise a helluva lot more than me, or just be better than me !

I'll keep trying.......in fact, my wife says i'm very trying all the time...... :D

We have got a member who took the game up at 50, and got down as low as 3. Slipped back to 4 now but he is 68. Won the British 65-70 champs a couple of years back. Not long off the tee, but a great short game. Best putter in the club, with left hand below right.

Still beleive I can get back down to a decent 9 or 10 handicap but rather than that being some kind of holy grail now I'll try my hardest everytime I play but the score will be what it'll be. I'll still get hacked off if I hit it poorly especially if it has been going well in practice but I'm trying to enjoy it more and not get too hung up on the scores. However I have to go out thinking each round will be the one. I'm competitive by nature and so have to at least think I'll get cut each time (not usually the case) or I lose interest very quickly

Is anyone out there actually just happy to be out playing golf, and what'll be will be?

No. Don't be silly. :D

However, last few games I've gone out totally relaxed about things, and scored rather well.

I couldn't give a stuff what h/cap I play off. If I have a good day then I'll score well and if it's a bad one I won't - simples.

Squeaked out a few holes today, first par5 was 3 off the tee and made bogie with the second ball to card an 8.

Second par5 nearly holed for albatross as it rolled past he hole but at least I canned the 15ft putt back for eagle.

Stupid game.
