Handicap target

Mine last year was to get at least a handicap. I'd never held a club before and only started in March, First game in May. Put my first 3 cards in got given a handicap of 25.

Only played in 1 comp, but am going to dedicate my weekends to Comps this year. With that in mind I have several targets.
  • Reduce 3 putts to <1 for each 54 holes. :(
  • Reduce the ferocity of my slice to a fade at most. :o
  • Learn my distances for my all my clubs in bag. :D
  • Practice at least 3 times per week. :p
  • Improve my cardio and strength fitness to help with all the above, and improve my concentration levels throughout the rounds.
  • Drink at least 3 pints after each comp ;)

At present I dont have a driver, and hit my 3 wood an average of 215 yards. My 6 Iron 140, and PW 110. I want to put at least 10 yards on each of my clubs, and improve my dispersion to <20yards.

Am I being unrealistic, I can get to the range and manage the cost of 300 balls a week, and get in the bunkers and greens etc at the club for another 3 hours a week. Any advice for a practice regime would be greatly appreciated, and at the end of the year, I'll invite everyone to laugh at my expense if I fail miserably.

Failed in my target of 17.4 and went up a couple then dropped to 20 so not too bad.

Same target this year for me and hopefully i'll get there.

Steve, to be fair the distances stated are not bad by any means, let alone someone who hasnt played for a full year. Ive played on and since i was 13 (now 31) and off 15 i cant hit my wedge 110 yards, and my 3w is only 220/225

instead of working on distance work on dispersion rates and swinging easy. with most par 4 being around 350/400 a 3 wood straight, 6i and half wedge with 2 putts is still bogey golf and this will win medals and get you to 18h/c quicker than wild slices (in your own words) and lost balls. ;)

Set myself a target of single figures and failed. I got to 10.6 and threw away a couple of chances to get lower but in the end crept back up to where I am now. If I'm honest, I never really managed to play enough to seriously threaten single figures.

Target this year is the same, I'll be playing more and am confident I'll achieve it.

Feel free to remind me of this this time next year :D

This was me in last years thread

Now = 11.2

Aiming for 7, will be happy with 8, and disappointed if I don't get to 9.

Poor deluded soul that I am

I had set myself the goal of getting to 15 from 19. Managed to get cut 1.2 after a good round on Sunday to just make it at 15.4. I am now looking at trying to get to 13 by this time next year.

Baby number 2 on way in April so my target is to put 3 cards to keep my handicap :D

Avoided this thread last year as i was sick of going up and up and missing my target. Goal was just to go out and enjoy it, which i did and managed to come down a whopping 0.1 :D

Ha Yeah three putts are my killer and I think I am not a bad putter! I still have usually at least 3 a round :(

I am currently 15, will be a LONG time before I get enough 0.1s to go to 16 so I think I will soon go down. I had a pretty average game last weekend and stood on the 16th with 31 points, then NRed my way home :(

Still its early in the year after the winter break so its all benchmarking stuff. Much better than where I was last year... hadn't taken the game up yet!

The same goal as last year and that was to get back to 3 again. This will gain me entry into a few prestigious events too so acts as an extra incentive.

The two worst parts of my game were my driving and my medium distance pitching. I've managed to do a fair bit of work on them since and both are going well during the winter months so will start the season with a fair bit of optimism.

got to stop the yippish odysey, might have to wear a plaster cast on my left wrist. (or any other suggestions)

Hmmm, something to help you stop using your wrists when putting...........

No, sorry.

:D

I thought someone might be along to correct me but looks like it's been missed.

Get yourself a V-Easy :)

Currently 9.4 would be happy with 8 even at the end of the year, the way the handicap went last year from 10.5 to 9.4 was a lot of +.1's then a few good rounds this year want to keep in the buffer zone more.
That was my target for last year and did acheive it but went out to 8.3 so happy enough 7 even is the target for this year.

Was hoping to go from 26.2 to 24.0 but only managed to shift it to 25.3. So my target for this year is 24, but I would hope to get to 22

As with many of us it is my consistancy that keeps holding me back, 14 and 15 good holes and 3 very poor ones. I played in our Captains drive In/Out on Sunday with a guy who plays of 9 and a lady who now plays off 22 but has been (when younger) off 12, they couldn't believe I was off 25. It was a Texas scramble, drove OK for 14 holes, then drove into ponds on the 15 and 18 and into the trees on 16 and 17.
But then hit stunning shots into the greens at 16 (just over the back from 185 yards)and 17 (30 foot from the hole from about 210 yards with a strong wind behind, both from my partners tee shots.

As many of the members say I am a very dangerous player off 25 as they know I can par most holes and birdie a good number of them. My ecletic score for last year was 45 and with our par at 71 this put me second in the whole of the club.

11 was my target for last season starting from 17.7. I made it down to 12 for a short while and then crept up to 13 (12.5).

I could and should have gone lower but didn't cope too well mentally when I was actually swinging well. Learned a lot from a full season last year and if I could get to 11 this year, I'd be happy.
