Handicap question

If player A handicap is 16.6 he would play of h/c17 in a strokplay comp. Player B plays of a handicap of 17.4 and would also play of 17 in a strokeplay comp.

My question is the difference between the two handicaps is .8 would that mean that player B would receive a shot from player A in a matchplay comp.

The reason I'm asking is that I am due to play in a winter knockout soon and I just want to be sure where I stand.

No you both play off 17. While your exact handicaps may differ, your playing handicaps are the same. Sorry thats how it works

As soon as you get to .5 it gets rounded up and .4 gets rounded down. So in theory you can be as much as 0.9 different.

Both players will play off 17

Sadly, the higher player won't get a shot. Having said that, I see your point and in a way if the difference is almost 1 stroke, then a shot on the hardest hole might make some sense.
Then again, they're so close, it ought to come down to the best on the day really. If the h'caps are spot on, even 2 or 3 shots difference won't stop the better player of the two winning on the day.

I often play folk off 10 or 14 without shots, just for fun (friendly games). I played for many years against a player who was always 1 or 2 lower than me, the fact that we just played made it seem more competitive. There's nothing worse than losing to someone of the same standard when you both play well and it came down to a poxy stroke on the hardest hole.

Bear in mind the difference between going round 17 over instead of 18 over is one putt.
