Now WHS is in full swing, are any clubs putting handicap limits on who can win their comps? Are clubs allowed to put these limits on or is it purely down to each club?
In the past I know of clubs who have restricted their majors to a handicap limit of 18.

It is only the club that decides.

We have no limits on our regular club comps but have limits on our Opens.

Our club championship is a scratch championship, no limit on handicap but you must play off scratch
Our club handicap championship has no limit.

In general we have remained with a maximum of a “28” Course Handicap for both whites and yellows using the appropriate HI as the definitive limit. On the majority of the competitions we allow members who hold a HI above that limit to play but they have to play at the 28 CH.

Do you charge them even though the likelihood of them coming in the prizes is slight or do you have a secondary prize for those with higher handicaps which is our way of solving the issue.

What is the point of having a limit if you have a secondary prize? Surely just up the limit?

One of our comps this year has already been won with a course handicap of 40 (medal) and you couldn't have got a more popular winner. Without that handicap he would never have been any where near winning a comp.

We've had a comp won by someone of 40 with 44 points. The conditions that day were brutal. Next best score was 32 points.

2 days before they won another comp by not such a wide margin. But that was playing off 38.

Do none of your clubs have winners for divisions - scratch to 10, 11 to 19 and 18 to 28 used to be what was played in normal comps when I was a regular participant - obviously if there’s a trophy involved you could only have one winner but that’s not your normal weekly comp.

It is hard to believe that there are still clubs who insist on establishing a watershed of 28. 28 is no longer the maximum handicap.

We have divisions but not for major comps, it’s an avenue with the HC increases we are looking at.

I will be interested to know if we are truly out of step with most local clubs. We have three divisions for prizes at weekends, but two during mid week medals and comps. I’ve not had a single complaint from the membership about that Term of Competition. Our Opens have similar limits, in fact a little tighter for the Over 60s.

Monthly Medals and Mid week Stablefords are Divisions but " Board Comps " are max HI 18 to win. There is a lot of debate of this at the moment form both all handicap categories, we the M&H team are suggesting " Board " comps are, for example, Centenary Trophy 0 ~ 18 and Centenary Bowl 18 Plus. Some comps like the club Championship over two days and Jubilee 36 holes in one day will stay as 18

Yes we do as appropriate for the number of players but there is no handicap limit to enter. The number of players in each division is only roughly based upon handicap and is moved so that there is about the same number of players in each division. We have a best gross prize in all nett score comps (medals) so the very low handicaps have something to play for.

We moved from 20 to 24 max for board comps some years ago. First board comp was yesterday and H&C decided on 24 max Playing Handicap or Strokes Received. Higher handicaps may enter, but as far as the comp goes, 24 max for strokes received or playing handicap.

We run 2 Comps in one for some of our board Comps, ie, everyone can enter the event, as it’s a qualifier and I don’t believe Congu allow you to force a player to play off a lower handicap. However, the Trophy is limited to 18 or below. Both winners receive a prize.
