Interesting. I have just been browsing the R&A rules, regarding the above.

It states "No portable device" may be used in comp's regardless of what it is (mobile phone, or dedicated unit). Unless a local rule is past by the committee?

yes none allowed unless a local rule is made permitting them. Most clubs and comps now have a local rule to cover this, our club certainly does and any national comps you enter do too

The rules are as Fundy says

I would hate to belong to an old fuddy duddy course where three Major Generals and a 90 year old decides for the rest of the club that " we never had them in my day and we certainly don't want them now" I cant understand why the latest rule book didn't ok them for everyone - oh the R and A have to make life difficult!

Yes it's a crazy rule. As you can take it with you, with a course planner on it. Or a chart with the length you hit each club. So it's just stupid to me. You can use it for one thing. But need a local rule for the other? surely using a electronic course planer is not that much different from using GPS?

The R and A had a golden opportunity with the last rule updates to clarify this, and make DMDs legal for use every where. They didn't do it.

I wonder why?
