I should know better being a guest for the magazine but after a crap day at work all I want to do is get stuck into the meaty stuff I've not had time or been allowed to follow at the hospital.

I do try where possible to make the spelling as accurate as possible but admit my major weakness is apostrophies and their correct placement. I wrote a chapter of a golf related book I'm thinking about and forwarded it to AliB who is a very talented writer (check her blog out on the the main pages) and she had a whale of a time correcting my punctuation.

Anyway at the end of the day dyslexia rules KO

Bob,

The curse of the pedant is eternal vigilance. At least it is for me. I spotted 4 errors with apostrophes in a presentation I was at today. I just can't help it, they leap out at me. I felt guilty about a post I made a few minutes ago (you'll find it in the lounge, made before I read this thread!) but there are limits. I hated latin at school, but since adulthood have been grateful for what it taught me. I know it's an emotive topic, but hey, I'm human and I care about it!

I with Grumpy on this.

I hate bad spelling but I actually have a problem with light bulbs...I can't go anywhere these days without scanning a room for light bulbs that need replacing.....

Bob, I think you got out of the end of the bed this morning. :D

I think there is a big difference between those who clearly know the language and spelling within the limits of their regular use of words, limited vocabulary use, is as much a problem as limited vocabulary. Also Internet sites are not the place to expect good grammar for a number of reasons.
1. simple key pad errors.
2. simple mental block yet brave enough not to use spell check which many grammar cops always use.
3. The wide ranging cultural, educational, social and language differences.
4. The gutteral language users often aligned with those who enjoy the manipulation or abuse of the language itself.

The list is quite big and someone from one or several of those catagories exist in this forum. I could offer many words verbally to most on here that none could spell correctly but I dont believe in nit picking, however there is a level that deserves address and thats when its extreme.
One or two are extreme either with the silly 'text speak' or the gutteral or the general abuse of language and grammar.

The trouble is in one or two cases that it is probably not their fault. So I just plod along making the odd mistake, having the odd mental block and sometimes do things just to get a response, but when I come on a web site I am only interested in what people have to say, and so long as they are understood it should not require educational police to make comment, after all leading by example rubs off, trying to lead with ridicule or condemnation often works in the oposite direction.

We live in a world where blame is all too easily displayed, excuses easily obtained, yet examples rarely set.

HNJ, did you just tell me off? I'm not sure :)
Going back to my original post, I don't expect perfect grammar, but was just wondering if others were fed up trying to read some peoples' efforts.
No-one has mentioned my other question, has there been a room 101 thread?

Definitely, definately, I did point out in my post that honest spelling mistakes were ok.

Obviously not.

Lol.

Damn. I really hate that.

It's only spelling it's not like it's the death of the english language!

Yes people make mistakes in spelling and grammar but come on it's not the end of the world.

Oh and people from the early 19th century would have a heart attack if they saw the way we talk these days!

It's a language it evolves, text speak will eventually take over I'm afraid. And I don't even have a mobile where's that going to leave me?

That well be as maybe. However my old man told me when I was out of school and looking for a job. "The people interviewing you grew up with different standards, and they'll expect you to meet those standards. Not what you think is cool, hip or modern."

I grew up as a chameleon, able to fit what was required of me in different professional and social situations. It's just courteous and respectful.

Im quite similar HH, I swear like a trooper in the office but when out on site I am polite and all business. If the customer is really down to earth, I'll have a laugh and a cuppa, I can usually gauge folk pretty well face to face and know when situations need a professional approach. I have made a few howlers in my past when I was younger and its funny how you learn from your mistakes faster than lucking out in a situation sometimes.

It was 7.19 when I started this and I had just read this post

'i can see both sides of the debate, and i like both. the first comp i won was stableford, gross 79 off 16, i know what you are going to say. previous day i shot 18 points, then worked 12 night shift, had 2 hours sleep, and dropped shot and lost ball. also depends if playing 3/4 handicap, if so it then favors lower handicaps. but as stated, bad hole pick up, so pros and cons for both, if you play either enjoy, thats the main idea, does not always work. if you dont like stableford dont play. sport is what you make it'

I'm with hapless re the chameleon bit especially in golf. I can be polite and deferential to visiting clubs, captains etc but can be one of the boys in the bar too. Its about adapting. Eve when I went out to work in 1983 there was still an old school feeling to the civil service and a lot of the EO (line managers) and HEO (office managers) wouldn't dream of talking to a school leaver. It was about being polite and courteous in any dealings and building up their trust.

When I was growing up at Wimbledon Common we had the like of Dan Maskell the old BBC tennis commentator. He was about as old school as it got but he made sure the juniors knew where the boundaries were and the consequences of crossing them. He had nothing to do with running the junior section but had a defined view on how kids, especially in the formal (as clubs use to be) setting of a clubhouse. It was this sort of grounding and that of my parents that I hope has made me into a reasonably well balanced guy who is socially adept in most situations.

My next door neighbour told me that text speak has to be accepted by the examination board of Scotland. It is a dosgrace that kids are left to make up a whole new language because they cant be arsed to learn the one we have.

It used to be that we (as kids / young adults) had to fit in with our elders / employers. No longer it seems.

I'm dreding turing up for an interview and having some 'yoof' interview me, and I won't understand a word he's saying. It's bad enough being turned down for jobs that I can easily do and contribute to, after answering ten questions online. Whatever happened to people analysing your skills and experiance! I'm really starting to worry about where it's all heading.

If it wasn't for the golf and the chat on here, I'd think I'd be heading down a very bad road!

I used to work for a car paint distributor, talking every day to guys ranging from Managing Directors to the Oily Rag's Oily Rag!

You can't speak the same way to them all and hope to get your message across.

I text my pupils quite a lot and I refuse to use txtspeak. I type out each word every time - after all I did go to a Grammar School!!

And on the subject of Grumpyness - Jeez, I reckon every Dickhead and his brother were out driving on the roads today. What a nightmare.... Nearly died 3 times and none of it was the fault of the learner!!

So basically we don't use the same language as kids today?

Shock horror people! I remember trying to explain to my dad what rap was (he found out when I played NWA's straight outta compton :D},the look of utter confusion on my mums face when I expalined I was "into" grunge etc etc etc.

We are (mostly) old we aren't supposed to understand what kids get upto these days it's the natural order of things.

And I'll bet your mum and dad thought the same thing about you all!

And so we turn full circle to the original topic title. Spot on fore - we ARE turning into our parents, and maybe that's as it should be. I'm damn sure going to enjoy embarassing my kids with my old man behaviour!
