Great shot

Played today and one of the chaps in our draw kept calling shots great and fantastic as soon as I hit them, often they were not that good at all. 🤣 It really started to irritate me to the point I had to tell him to wait and see how the shots panned out first 😂

On a separate note, I have an irrational dislike of clapping when a good shot is hit.
I’ve a mate who does the same. He means well but he’s no idea where the ball went. 😂

To be fair, I do get it. There’s a world of difference between what’s good for a low single figure golfer and one who plays off a high teen handicap.

We have a guy who plays with us who is off 2 and is an absolute perfectionist. Ex pro sportsman and a real competitor. If he hits a 280 yard draw into the middle of the fairway and I say great ball, he’ll be hacked off because he’s not hit it 290. Years ago I just said to him not to be offended if I didn’t compliment what I thought was a good shot, because I could see it irritated the life out of him when, by his standards, the shot was average at best.
Different levels 🤷‍♂️
I’m happy if I’ve got a 2nd shot.

Doesn't bother me, probably because nobody says it much after my shots, but when they do I say "thankyouverymuch" in my best Tommy Cooper accent.

As long as they / you / anyone doesn’t pipe up with the ultra annoying refrain, “Golf shot”, I don’t care what anyone says when they’re trying to be polite

Edit: I think this comes from YouTube and the ultra annoying Rick and Guy

"Well out" after a bunker shot is a particular bugbear for me.

Yes, i know some will merely be happy to get out of the sand, thats fair enough, but a compliment should only be given after a good shot!!

Jimmy Bullard says it as well. If we ever play together again I'm going to remember that one for you. 😁

When Rick hits a shot into the green & Guy pipes up “this could go in”
Only for the over draw & just catches a piece of the green 😬

His overdraw is infuriating. My thought process often repeats with these three stages:
  1. Bloody hell, that's missing way right.
  2. Oh no, it's drawing back. Lovely. Wish I could do that.
  3. Miss left. Again. Now he'll screw up the chip.

Strange that it doesn’t happen when testing clubs on the sim.
Why is that?🤔

Is the game really meant to be for fun?

I am fortunate to have won my club championship twice. The most preciously memorable two days of my golfing life.

I don't remember having any fun on any of the 72 holes played.
The 36th hole on each day felt almost like mental torture - quite the opposite of fun. And it was a great relief when it was over.

I do have fun on a golf course at times. But competitive golf to me is a fairly serious business.

It’s a hobby at best for us

None of us are playing to put food on the table and it doesn’t matter what we score because we can see pay the bills and play again the next day

It’s not a career it’s just a hobby for the weekends or weekday playing a sport

Yes! Every amateur game is meant to be for fun.
I have fun every single time I play. It doesn't matter whether I win or lose, play well or badly, the only thing that matters is enjoyment. If I was playing to put bread on the table it would be a different matter, but I'm not.
I could be doing countless other things but I choose to spend my money and my time on golf. I can't comprehend voluntarily giving up my money and my time on something that I don't consider fun.
