Played today and one of the chaps in our draw kept calling shots great and fantastic as soon as I hit them, often they were not that good at all. 🤣 It really started to irritate me to the point I had to tell him to wait and see how the shots panned out first 😂

On a separate note, I have an irrational dislike of clapping when a good shot is hit.

Yeah imagine people being nice and complimentary - awful 😂

To be fair, I do get it. There’s a world of difference between what’s good for a low single figure golfer and one who plays off a high teen handicap.

We have a guy who plays with us who is off 2 and is an absolute perfectionist. Ex pro sportsman and a real competitor. If he hits a 280 yard draw into the middle of the fairway and I say great ball, he’ll be hacked off because he’s not hit it 290. Years ago I just said to him not to be offended if I didn’t compliment what I thought was a good shot, because I could see it irritated the life out of him when, by his standards, the shot was average at best.

Wasn't even that, he was calling them great as soon as hit. TBF I am a good chipper and he said they just looked and sounded good.

😉

This is a superb thread start.

Absolutely brilliant.
Fantastic.
Well done.

👏👏👏👏👏

I was praising my playing partner who is a pro all the time on Friday, turned pro off plus 6 and was an absolute ball striker, I’ve never played with anyone remotely close to him 😂😂😂
Was probably sick of hearing it 😂

I have a friend off single figures who doesn't drive the ball very far but hits almost every fairway. I say 'nice shot' after virtually every one of his drives, just because hitting the fairway is a big deal for me! I'm now worried that I'm annoying him - thanks for that.

I can certainly see how that could get annoying. My wife is a bit like that, anything that gets airborne is a good shot to her - you don't want to hear it when you've just missed the green with a wedge.

I tend not to play with any scratch/low players since there are hardly any in my club - so I generally wait until the ball hits fairway or green before I give it the 'good shot' treatment, and then I'm pretty safe that they're not going to be annoyed it's 15 feet from the pin instead of 5 or something.

I play a good few opens with a bloke off 3, mid 60's so he is declining :ROFLMAO:. Hits the most beautiful gentle draw on his drives, centre of the fairway more often than not and a good distance. I tend to say good shot the first few holes and then after that I tell him he's had enough compliments for the day, otherwise it becomes repetitive. I will crack after a while, if he nails another on 17 or 18 or so. It's a sad day if you can't compliment a good shot.

I played with someone who did this. When we were on the tee he said "good shot" or "nice pick up" (WTF does that even mean?) literally as soon as I hit the ball. Even though the ball is slicing into the trees.

It became annoying after a few holes. Firstly it's not a sincere compliment. Secondly, if someone says good shot when you slice a ball into the trees it sounds like they are taking the p. Thirdly, it sounds very patronising, implies that they thought that was a good shot for you, even though it was terrible.

Here's a question - would you rather that, or someone shouting fore when you can see your ball is going to land safely?

I do the same thing with one of the guys I play with. After about 3 or so I'll just say "I'm not saying good shot anymore as you hit too many of them".

I'd prefer someone shouting fore, I think I'd find that amusing. Unless they did it every hole, in which case I would assume they have a visual impairment or a lack of depth perception.

I remember a guy once gave me a lecture about not shouting fore after I hit it straight towards a group on the tee. The thing is, they were over 200 yards away and I was only hitting an 8 iron. To be fair, that was just as patronising as the guy who says good shot when you hit a terrible drive.

It's not amusing when they've annoyed you earlier in the round, I can tell you that much from experience!!!

I think this a thing you would mainly say to a beginner that literally means they struck it well enough to get it off the ground. It does beggar belief that some people can't differentiate that some people expect to do that as a minimum every time. 😄
