Graphite shaft butt trimming!

Whats the best way to cut down graphite shafts? I believe that a standard shaft cutter is a no no as it can splinter the graphite.

I was going to put a bit of masking tape on the shaft and then use a sharp hack saw to trim the shast????

Good or bad idea??? I want half an inch off.
