Gps watch v laser rangefinder

I use a GPS (not a watch) and a laser, the latter for distances from 120-60 yards as that's where my practice on distance control has been. Both devices have their merit although most of the GPS watches I've seen, although they are evolving, only give front middle and back yardages. I wanted something more so I could see where bunkers etc are. Also where I stuck the ball it's not always possible to get a laser reading

same for me homer

bought an apple watch when they came out and thats my GPS watch.. just use for distances when required

if its close (130 and in probably) for example today had a chip over a bunker.. laser out... 40 yards.. perfect been practicing 40 yard chips.. nailed it

plus a laser at the range is useful

Just be careful and make sure apple watch is ok for use in medals you may be unknowingly using a banned device

I'm going to be selling my Touch soon and go for the new SkyCaddie Lynx Watch which has a shot tagging facility plus a few more bells & whistles.

Another who uses both, had the gps years now but the laser is a useful addition to the bag.

Out of interest, does anyone's flags have laser reflectors fitted ?

Definitely helped in practice. No matter which bay I am in I can know exact distances and it makes it more purposeful

Dont play in monthly medals but it's the same as a gps watch it just run off golf shot on the phone which isn't a banned device

if was tho I'd just use the laser

GPS for me, easy enough to have an accurate estimate of flag position on green from the front, middle and back yardage and as a handicap golfer I am not enough to hit the correct yardage to the mm as given by laser!

Too many other variables to factor in anyway.

I'm sure I read somewhere that if the device can do other things- tell you wind direction, compass etc then they can't be used... like most smartphones can't be used not sure if the rules been changed. Also not sure if apple watch would have such features which would make it banned just thought it would many features a smart phone has

apple watch uses gps from phone doesn't have GPS in the watch and no compass

swear I read that so long as features are disabled it's fine

May I ask why you don't play in your monthly qualifying medals?

not in a club

if I join the little club I was planning to I will play in the comps but at the moment only comps I play in is society days

GPS watch. I am really not good enough to be able to hit any shot of 80 yards or more 5 yards either way so the accuracy of the GPS is more than good enough for me. In addition, there are lots of blind shots on my course so the GPS wins hands down in that instance.

Robbo I've seen you play you surely don't have many blind shots at ours? From thinking- the 6th if you pull it left, the 8th if down after the path(probably), the 12th definitely no matter what, the 14th if too far back and that's it? so 3 avoidable and 1 definite :D

At our course we have a small flag on the main flag. If the pin is at the front of the green the small flag is at the base of the main flag. If pin in middle the wee flag is half way up and so on works quite well on lkng approaches when you are using a gps on front/middle/back format.

I use both. I find for some shots one is more appropriate than the other but generally for approaching the green it's useful to know exactly where on the green the flag is so check both if possible.

Another user of both. GPS fine for general distance work (180 yds and more) which I'm not good enough to be that precise with but for anything 100 yrds and below i really want to know exactly how far it is. Those potentially nasty little 50-70 yarders are neutered nicely with the laser.
