Having always wanted to borrow a GPS to see if I would use one, it has been interesting to play with Sammmebee twice recently and be able to see how effective they are. I have been very impressed to be honest, and it will definately be on my xmas list. Knowing the correct yardage makes life so much easier and makes club selection so much quicker.

I have also played with a guy with a lazer range finder, and he was slow using it, and not accurate either (+/- 20 yards). He was also a total burk, so this may be a reflection on him and not the device.

My club has also allowed use of these devices for comps. No yardage charts for me.

Only just found this forum and its nice to hear what other golfers think.

I have a Shotmiser as i friend I have who plays on the PGA North Region has one. I wasn't really into GPS but after seeing his i was impressed. The other reason i bought it was because it was sat nav on it and the others don't give you the option when you buy? I did look at Caddyaid but when i downloaded a demo course it was no where near as good as the demo they show on their website, plus it says Westwoods caddy uses it but i saw him using a Bushnel at the Open practise day!?! Then looked at Skycaddie (Mainly because i saw an advert with it strapped onto Natalie Gulbis's hips!!) but it only gives numbers and i quite liked the touch screen bit where even if your on the other fairway it works! You can also put videos, songs and all that onto it if that floats your boat?

Right, I taken the plunge and got the SkyCaddie 2.5 from American Golf. £169 + Free in Car Charger + Free Leather Case (£40's worth) They wouldnt price match £144 and give the extras which was fair enough.

I will load on the software and my home course later today and may have chance to play 3 holes tonight and try it out. I will report back my findings guys. ;)

Also, on the American Golf subject I did bag one other bargain and one amazing bargain:-

1. 3no All weather Mizuno gloves normally £9.99 each. £15 for 3.
2. One dozen Srixon Z-URC balls for £15.99!!!!

Sounds like a bargain especially top quality Srixons at that price. Enjoy the SC. Not sure if you have access to a practice ground but the ball marker button is great if you do use one as you can hit shots with every club and then accurately measure off how far you hit them and get a definitive distance. Makes club selection so much easier. If SC says 159 to the middle that is and easy 5 for me. If it is say 144 to front pin then that would be either a full 7 or a comfy 6 (depending on conditions).

Sky cadd has my course, but when was it mapped? It has changed alot in the last two years. It would be useful if they published the mapping date.

Well the SkyCaddie was fantastic yesterday, unfortunately I was not! Par 69, Handicap 15, Round Score 93!!

Not only is this really helpful for course strategy and club selection, but also I am starting know how far I am hitting each club.

Also, my playing partners were all asking me how far they had to go and how far they had hit there balls.

Funny thing was that I was really p'd off my round yesterday and my mates blamed it on the SkyCaddie stating 'that I had too much to think about'! and it was confusing me.

Would recommend a SkyCaddie thouroughly.

PPE I'd suggest using the ballmarker facility and finding a preactice area somewhere where you can hit balls and then measure with your SC exactly how far you hit them (or get an average). I found I was at least +/- 4-10 yards on how far I thought I was hitting compared to what my SC5 was telling me. It has helped me club a whole lot better from the distance given on any hole.

HJS - Yes, I've actually thought about hitting 10 balls with each club and measuring the average distance, but based on yesterdays performance it could be anything from 30-250 yards! So just to confirm, for example, before you had your SC you thought that you could hit your 8 Iron 150yrds, but you were actually hitting it 158yrds?

Just one other question, Can you input a lay-up measurement into the SC? For example I hit my 8 iron really well and about 150yrds (or so I think!) and I like to leave this distance for my approach.

If only. I thought I was hitting my 8 iron about 135 and it turned out to be 127 which meant I was always landing in the front/middle part of the green and never really attacking the pin. Not so much of a problem with a 5 or 6 iron where I am happy to make a GIR but with a seven and in I've really tried this year to put it in birdie territory (even if it mostly ended in bogie country).

The best way is to hit about 10-15 balls and mark the shortest of the properly struck ones and the longest one and then either take the mean average or measure the middle two balls between those two points.

The SC doesn't have a facility to input data into it but a lot of the longer holes, certainly on the mapping of my course, has a lay up distance. Other than that it will give you a distance to a spot (hazard etc) further down the hole and just subtract your yardage to go from that one to give you a lay up figure

PPE.

Not very helpful I know. But Caddyaid had the lay up feature that you are talking about. But as HJS says, it's just basic math to work it out on the SC.

Got to admit that the GPS really helped me last weekend. Shots I would have taken a 5 iron to, I took a 7 to instead and landed it on the green. Par a hole that I've never par'd before, which only leaves 2 holes left.
