Gps or Laser

If money were no object and you carried both a Skycaddie (other makes are available but not necessarily so good) and a laser rangefinder, my guess would be that after the honeymoon period you would use the gps more often.

I'll go along with this.
Having said that there are a few holes at my place where judging the position of the hole can be tricky. There is no help such as different colour flags for front. middle or back and no "ball" halfway up the flagstick. If you can't see the bottom of the flag its difficult to gauge. Many a time I've come up short or gone long as I've misjudged the actal pin position. So a laser in that situation would help me no end.

Most courses I play around here have some system in place to give you an idea of where the pin is on the green - different coloured flags, ball on slider, pin placement charts, etc.

With that info and a gps device giving distance to front, middle and back, then there is no excuse for not knowing to within say 5 yards how far the pin is. All you have to do is to be able to hit the ball that (almost) exact distance - and there's the rub ............ :( :(

If you can hit the ball from say 80 - 200 yds to within 4 or 5 yards then go with the laser, if not the gps should be more use. :)

A GPS will give you a yardage to the front, centre and back of a green from ANYWHERE on the golf course. Laser wont.
A Sonnocaddie V300 will download all the courses you need free of charge and has no yearly subscription. Skycaddie wont.
Cost, around £250 but no more to pay.
And that's good enough for me :)

I use a gps as I never know how far away the pin is. I however have it on my iPhone with an app called golfshot gps. It is a cracking app which let's you log all your statistics from the round and also shows an aerial view of the course. Great app that is cheap too and no annual subscription. A good reason to get an iphone really :)
