GPS dont need to be exspensive!

This is a grey area that's been talked about many times.

As far as the rules of golf go, I believe that the use of an iPhone is banned in competition play due to there being an unremovable Compass app on the phone.

Android phones, as I understand, are "ok" as there are no compass apps built in that can't be removed.

Though I'm not sure what would stop someone with an android phone installing a compass app walking down the 1st and uninstalling it coming up 18.

I have a HTC and use Free Caddie Pro. It's a great little app and has got me out of a few binds.

Can anyone explain to me how having a compass - digital or otherwise - can improve my chances of having a decent score?

I've always wondered this myself. The direction of the wind in relation to the direction I am hitting is easily determined by throwing up a bit of grass, the actual direction irrelevent. Maybe they'l ban the throwing of grass next :D

What a load of pish - we can all cheat on the course and have many oppertunities but we dont - why can't we self regulate this??????

Fully agree, the current interpretation and FAQ above is a nonsense. I can go out in a comp today with a compass (a real one) in my bag and so long as I don't use it to gain advantage I have broken no rule. If I do the same with an iPhone compass I am apparently breaking the rules. If I have the iPhone in my bag for texting or calls etc and use a dedicated GPS for distance I am again OK. Crazy and needs sorting out. The only way to do this is to say that you mustn't use any device to get any other information other than distance. If you do, you are then a cheat. Or is that too simple?

I never understood the reasoning behind not allowing compasses or iphones etc.
How come I can reasonably understand what direction I'm going in from where I started due to landmarks and geographical points but I can't use a compass.
How come I can throw grass up and see which way the wind blows. I can also relate to the temperature by how my body feels and what temperature my car shows on the way to the course.
I can see the sky, and if there are clouds in it and rain falling. But I can't look at an iphone weather app.

Pretty ridiculous reasoning not to allow non dedicated DMD's
