I'm pretty sure there are - just don't recall which one(s). The others will put you right.

Mono - come on? - you've been on the forum long enough and can't have missed at least some of the gripes about skycaddie (and others that charge) subscriptions

Dunno about dedicated GPS, but if you have a Windows mobile phone, a blackberry or an iPhone (Or any java phone with a built in aGPS)get Freecaddie.

that way it doesn't cost you anything...yup absolutely free and i'm sure other members here will agree it's a great bit of software, and if you want the 'extra' bits you can pay about 18 quid for the pro version.

I take it that you approve of the Freecaddie then?

As far as I'm aware the Golfbuddy is the only stand-alone GPS that doesn't require a yearly subscription in order to download courses. The Sureshot, however, does give you 3 free courses and then subs on top of that.

Biggest problem with Golfbuddy is the initial price. You'll pay around £250 for the black'n'white version and £350 for the colour. So more expensive unit but no subs against less expensive unit and subs - probably works out a similar amount over 2-3 years.

If you only want a couple of courses then the Sureshot might be the one to go for. Check out the websites to be sure.

I have a Golfbuddy GPS Tour, it's not bad and does exactly what it says on the tin....

If your course isn't already mapped then you can request it to be mapped for free, but from my experience this process took quite a long time (nearly a month in my case) because Golfbuddy send someone to walk the course - or so they said!

Also it's pretty good how the system can store up to 20,000 courses. I'd say the major flaw is the lack of hole layout even though it has a decent colour screen. :p

Shotmiser has no subscription and courses are £5 each. The list of mapped courses isn't huge but you can request them to map one and it takes about 10 days. Mapped from a map though rather than someone walking and measuring the course.

It's a bit different to most others I've seen in that it shows the whole hole and the distance to centre of the green. Anything else you want to know (bunker carry, layup distance etc) you touch the screen and it gives you distance to that point from where you are, and distance to centre of green from that point.

I 'might' have one for sale soon ;)

I guess thats what appealed to me in the beginning with SC, the fact that they actually walk the course and so everything is done on the ground rather than off maps and via satellite. I do think there has been significant improvement in the 15 months or so since I got my SC when they seemed to be the market leader by a long way. There are a few other devices out now that if I was going to buy a GPS device I'd seriously consider. I have to say one of those in the sonocaddie which I've seen and think is a good piece of kit

As someone in the market for a GPS device, it would be really good to hear what real users make of them - there are only a few that get a mention and the "real" costs can sometimes be quite considerable. Has anyone tried the Caddie Lite, for example?
Having read several reviews, I was certainly interested in the Sky Caddie - the cheaper version in b/w would have been fine - I'm colourblind!

I've recently bought the Sonnocaddie 300 too. Brilliant.
No subs, free membership, free unlimited course download, scorecard with analysis facility, 15 hour battery life.
Stores up to 30 courses, 3D view of the hole

Those numbers are distances to bunkers, ponds etc and are not confusing as there are lines pointing to each object.
Very easy to use (oops :o)

Looks the business - just too expensive for me. I'm getting the SC2.5 - got it for £155 new. Even with the £30 subs per year I've got 4 years for the price of yours. Does colour make that much difference? I'm happy with Black'n'White personally.
