I just received a club I bought off ebay, it's a Maxfli DP-30 Australian blade 1 iron. I bought it with the intention of using it as a training aid when im at the range, my ball striking is usually good so if I can get a few decent strikes with this it's going to be a good confidence boost.
Trouble is the head is the size of matchbox and a sweetspot like a pinhead I will need to be on form. So is it a good idea? or could it go from confidence booster to confidence killer?

I.M.O if you have any doubt in your mind that hitting this club could be detrementle to your confidence i would not bother, however if you can hit it and not care what result you get then why not play around a bit. When i go to the range i always try and finish on a high as i can take the confidence to my next round, that in my oppinion is the whole idea of going to the range.

You're right. To be honest im 99% sure I could hit it well just about every time when my swing is 'right'. It's just that 1% chance it could be a bit of a comedown, i'll feel like i've 'fallen off my high horse' so to speak.

Good purchase, if you can't hit golf balls with it you could always spread a bit of Clover on your sandwiches with it!! :D

Personally I'd consign one of those to the antique roadshow and I could never master it. I think it would be a real confidence killer but if you think you have the swing to hit it then go for it. I'd be looking around for another training aid

If your handicap is less than 5, then you might just be able to hit it reasonably well. If it is 5 or more, then I would seriously suggest that you use it to hold up your tomatoes in the greenhouse, and look elsewhere for your confidence booster.

Well I dont have a handicap, if I did it would be more 10 than 5, but if I could chip 5 isn't out of the question. In other words, yes my ball striking is as good as a 5 HC.

If it's for the practise ground, then why not?

When I was playing more regularly I got myself made a smallish headed, overlong driver, purely for the range.

My logic was that, when I practised with my driver, I found my 3w really easy to hit afterwoods. So after using the ickie driver, my normal driver felt better as well.

Whether it worked physically, or just mentally, who cares. I didn't hit enogh decent shots with it to ever consider using it on the course, but every now and then I'd zing one which would go miles past my norm. Which was nice. :)

Well the 1 iron was a success, I gave it a whack at the range today for the first time. I hit about 30 balls with it, about 10 were poor contacts which went absolutely nowhere as I expected, it's the least fogiving club there is. But the ones I hit well went far better than I expected, A low penetrating flight with about 200+ yards carry, a few shots only finished 10 yards short of the 250 green. I'll be tempted to add it to the bag if I play in windy conditions or on a links.
