Hi All here is a question.

I have had golf lessons in the past on grass at Longhirst hall in Nothumberland which I quite enjoyed and improved my game a lot. However Im considering getting more over the winter months BUT what type to go for?

Do I do as I did before or do try the computer/video analysis?

I was looking for some advice on this and if you have any dealing with both on how much it can or wont improve the game

Cheers Chris

Most training aids can help a little or a lot, it depends on the person, there are a few that offer no help at all, I myself would rather practice on grass whenever possible.

I think the most importnat thing is to find a coach that works for you. Whils it is better to play off grass at this time of year and in the months to come, most practice grounds will become sodden and it can make good contact with the ball difficult particularly if you are refining your swing.

My advice would be find a good coach, get your swing video anlaysed to see the flaws for yourself, work with the pro to correct these withthe drills etc he gives you and then review in a month or so how it compares.

I nearly always had video lessons (10 yrs ago) but my new pro rarely does this.
t.b.h. I like to come away with a few thoughts and drills and it doesn't seem to matter if he's worked out what to work on with a video or not. Then again, I don't need to see the bad things in my swing...I know they're there. For a relative novice I guess "seeing" is good.

Video lessons are good to see your real swing, compare it to the swing in your head you would like to have, and slowly move the first towards the second.

I went with these guys:-

http://www.positiveimpactgolf.co.uk/

Can't speak highly enough of what they've done for me although I find myself weeping into my pint when I think about all the wasted years I swung a club before I met them.

Still, better late than never eh?

If you're in east Kent/Thanet then you probably already know the Manston Driving Range which is where they're based.

All the books and videos on swing mechanics are going to a charity shop apart from Hogans which contains what I humbly consider to contain the absolute BillyG idiot-proof grip lesson.

A good pro can save you a fortune, a world of pain both mental and in my case physical (see *) and help you to enjoy the swing the way if should be - a fluid, graceful and powerful athletic motion rather than a rag bag of badly cobbled together robotic parts.

Good luck with your own search and thank you Mr. Bisson at P.I.G. for finally setting me on the right path. Lesson 3 soon.

Bill
