Golf sixes - Centurion GC

I don't think this is 100% me like the Air Jordan post but I do 100% support it as it might be for someone and it might move golf forwards.

Pretty much sums it up for me.

I don't get the negativity tbh, if it doesn't work then what harm has trying it done? The ET was dying on it's backside if it carried on the way it was, Rolex series seems a good step for the "traditional" events but worth at least trying some other options to generate interest....

There's something a bit different on this week isn't there? The last day is 6 hole matchplay after a cut?

Yup it is, all explained here: http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2017/tournamentid=2017012/news/newsid=321004.html

I believe its 15k for the first rounders and 100k for the winners of course it not going to attract the top players.

However this is life I mean who wants to play in the cold for 100k as apposed to the warmth and the possibility of a million.

The doubters and haters will doubt and hate because that's what they do best.

That's way there is a lack of established players playing beyond Noren and Louis - need more than that to grab the attention

It needs money to attract the players Phil and, if successful, who knows this type of event may grow the prize pot through attracting bigger and better sponsors in future years. I don't like drawing parallels with other sports but do you think when 20/20 started they envisaged the money available in the IPL? You have to start somewhere is the point, some ideas may work others won't but you need to try them to find out.

Why are you so down on the ET trying different things? Would you prefer another 72 hole strokeplay event with a smaller crowd than I could fit in my back garden instead of this?

It does need money - lots of money , that's why it annoys me when they pay certain players millions just to turn up. It's all wrong going to different parts of the world hosting events to empty golf courses. The biggest events over the years on the ET are the one in the U.K. - the BMW and Masters - boost those events up , increase the prize money for those events plus the Scottish Open. Dip their hands into the deep pockets and attract the prize money.

But they also need help from the World Golf Rankings as well - need to stop the "points go with players" and have the actual events having the ranking points.

Getting players like McIlroy etc at events in the U.K. And Europe would help grow the game more than any Greensome 6 hole event with lesser known players

I don't think there can be a parallel with 20/20 because there was already a short form in existence - ODI and the backbone for it was also there. Pub/village teams have been playing 10 over beer games for years

Trying new things is good - trying to make the sport something it isn't will for me have the opposite affect.

In a utopian world I agree with you, some questions/comments though:

- Isn't it the sponsor (or Tournament Organising C'tee) that pays invite fees? I'd be surprised if it's the ET.

- Put their hands into what deep pockets? The ET was just about to collapse until Dubai stepped in. The very fact they'll horse the Tour around for these smaller prize pots indicates that they aren't exactly spoilt for choice.

- Boosting sponsorship is a great idea, surprised they haven't thought about that one..... Or, there just aren't the sponsors out there willing to put in a £5-£10m purse. This one is a bit of a vicious circle though as the reason they can't find big enough sponsors is because the quality of field and so it continues

- When would you propose to run all these events in the UK or are you going to bump any non-UK events out of our 4 month window of good enough weather?

- I knew you would say that re 20/20 :) Hence me saying it was only a point. Anyway, don't we have 9 hole courses, par 3 courses etc that are "short forms of the game already in existence"?

I'm not really arguing with you, I don't have the answers but some things need to change hence I can't understand why people vehemently oppose anything that is tried, this format doesn't excite me but I applaud them for trying different things

Everyone is saying it needs more money to attract the big stars, but if you ask any of the big stars, its not the money they play for anymore, its the challenge of playing against the best, the prestige of winning, it's not the money, yeah whatever.

Just smacks of desperation somewhat. I dare say I'll watch it but can't claim to be excited about it.

For some reason the holy grail seems to be to find a shorter jazzier version of golf but it just doesn't lend itself to that. Outside of a few holes on specific courses, notably on the PGA tour, golf just isn't a great spectator sport for the casual fan.

I think the comparison to 20/20 is valid and a lot of doom mongers were saying it would never take off and would be the death of cricket. I think this Golf Six will make an impression and yes it probably does need some big names but it has to start somewhere and to be honest the very top players of the ET will always be looking for rare off weeks or chasing the mighty $ on the PGA tour. It needs to be pushed hard and totally interactive and hopefully it'll grow year on year and if it does and purses increase I'm sure it'll start to get bigger names involved. As it's a totally unique event, it's impossible for anyone to tell how this will go, but the tour desperately needs to attract sponsors and grow
